Just got the original trilogy Blu-Ray set and have had Scream 4 for a while, cuz it's that time of year where I wanna see people get cut up and such, and I'm kinda tired of my crappy DVD's made from AVI files.
How would you rank the series?
1. Scream
2. Scream 2
3. Scream 4
4. Scream 3
Well Scream and Scream 2 are classics cuz they have that fantastic balance of humor and terror. Pretty genius to cast Drew Barrymore, use her extensively in promotion, then kill her off in the first scene. (And then do the same with Jada Pinkett-Smith and Omar Epps in the second one.) Plus Gale Weathers is forever That Bitch.
And Sidney Prescott is right up there with Laurie Strode as the ultimate Final Girl. The death scenes were more creative in the first two as well.
I think Scream 1 is still the best cuz it was fresh and new. Even tho Scream 2 was also fresh, it didn't have the same New Car Smell that the first had, but it was still great. I'm also biased - it was my first horror movie.
I just loved the idea of a satirical look at horror movies that actually delivered some thrills and scares. And frankly, Billy and Stu were the creepiest and best of all the Ghostfaces.
Scream 2 was almost as good as the first, because it had the first film's balance of humor, satire, and thrills. The death scenes were better, for the most part, than the first film, although nothing can top Tatum's death scene in terms of creativity. Plus, Laurie Metcalfe had years of practice playing Jackie on Roseanne, so by that time, she was pretty much the ONLY person alive who could play Debbie Salt/Mrs. Loomis the way she needed to be played. They killed Randy tho.
They can still go all the way to Hell for that one.
Scream 3...I enjoy it, but it's the least in the series for me because of the greater emphasis on satire and humor than terror. I understand why they toned the violence way down, but I don't have to like it. I mean, forgive me, but I think we actually need to SEE blood when people are being stabbed. Not to mention some people were stabbed once, barely bled, and died? Get REAL.
But it has its moments - most of them from Parker Posey, who really is the only actress alive who could have played that character. But Scott Foley as the killer? Oh god, I didn't buy it for one minute. And looking back, I can't believe I didn't see it coming immediately after Gale found him bloody in the coffin, when I should have realized it was obviously him since he's the only one we don't see getting "killed." If I saw it for the first time today, I'd probably be like "Wait, we didn't see him get killed? Yeah, he's the one."
I think Scream 4 was great, BUT Emma Roberts was totally wrong for Jill. With her little girl voice and her bad acting, what could have been a villain who came across as demented and insane just came across as a 10-year-old brat with a Veruca Salt complex. Although one can see it as a commentary on today's teenagers - spoiled brats used to getting what they want when they want it - I just think it's sloppy. Also, what up with filming the entire fucking movie in soft focus?
But other than that, I thought it did a great job at ripping apart the trend of endless remakes, reboots, sequels, etc. Plus it had great death scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing...Perkins? Which one was the black cop, Perkins? Either way, loved seeing him get stabbed in the head, stumble around, go "Fuck Bruce Willis," and collapse. Great example of going back to basics in terms of balancing scares and laughs. Oh, and KIRBY LIVES!
