What do you think would happen if past atrocities had happened in this day and age?

I mean with the advanced state of technology now, the social media, immediate access to news and the current state of world politics? Would we band together globally to put a stop to things like this, or do you think we would turn a blind eye to it like we do with problems in the Middle East and third world countries?

Posts: 13939 04/04/2013 10:14 AM	I think it would still be possible (clearly there are still some horrible things going on), but I do think it would be more difficult for say, the holocaust, to happen now. A large part of the reason things went as far as they did was because others couldn't or wouldn't believe that the situation in Germany had gotten as bad as it did. People didn't want to believe it so they turned a blind eye to many signs. It would be a lot harder to turn a blind eye to videos taken from iphones or graphic images of concentration camps, so if technology had made it easier for that type of evidence to get out, I think the US in particular, might have acted much more quickly. But you still need the population to care about those being harmed and sadly too many people across the world have very little regard for what happens outside their own borders.

Posts: 1172 04/04/2013 10:29 AM	atrocities go on everyday in the world, of course not on the scale of the holocaust, but yeah. i think its hard for the averge westerner to think about because the problems in certain places in the world seem to be and are so overwhelming. Posts: 4729 04/04/2013 11:36 AM Baby on JJBoard	I could see it happening in 2 scenarios: - if a big enough part of the population ends up in extreme poverty (which would then trigger enough anger to prompt such reactions towards another part of the population). In that case, as a previous poster mentioned, the population wouldn't care about those being harmed. - if the threat comes from outside and basically attacks us (Western population) on our own soil (think 9/11, but on a bigger scale). And this time, the "powerful" mass that could make a difference by caring and being outraged, would actually be the victims here. The rest of the world probably wouldn't care as much, and wouldn't even have the means to defend us if they wanted to. For this to happen, they'd basically have to attack the whole Western world at once (Americas & Europe). Because one will always defend the other. If you take both down simultaneously, then who will save both? Africa? No. Asia? lol probably not. Russia? Haha, maybe? The Middle East? Of course not. We'd be on our own. Besides, it wouldn't take that much to take down the whole internet / communication grid. I mean, it can definitely be done.

Posts: 388 04/04/2013 12:07 PM	I believe that it could happen again. I took a Holocaust course and it really opened my eyes. I never knew that countries, including the US, knew about what was happening. The War Refugee Board knew in 1942. It was understood that it was better to win the war first. I always got the impression from movies and such that once the allies arrived in Europe they found out what was happening. At the end of the course the prof asked the same thing you did. Not one person said no. I think it would have to be under certain circumstances for it to happen such a country in debt and the people are desperate to get out of it.

There are crazy people here in our country who would love to kill all the Muslims in the Middle East. Every day, you read of some crazy person who wants to drop nukes on Iran or Syria. Also, there are racists who want to eliminate all the minorities in this country. Find a message board called "Storm Front" for proof of that.

Posts: 33158 04/04/2013 5:20 PM	I think there is still such a big disconnect between the Western World and 3rd World countries. The Congo is in really rough shape and has a lot of problems but nobody else seems to really care - but what is happening there was going on in France or Canada instead I think there would be major outrage and people would be more proactive.
