People get shingles because they HAD the chicken pox. Because you can't get shingles if you haven't had chickenpox, the chickenpox vaccine reduces both your risk for chickenpox and shingles. http://www.everydayhealth.com/shingles/vaccine.aspx"Does the chicken pox vaccine (Varivax) prevent shingles? Not directly, since children who get the chicken pox vaccine, even if they don't ever get chicken pox, can still get shingles. Their risk of developing shingles does seem to be much less than for children who aren't vaccinated with the chicken pox vaccine though." About.com Pediatric Site. Also, just think about it. Vaccination is a controlled dose of the virus so that your body can build anti-bodies. So technically, if you get the vaccination, you've had chicken pox. You can also still get the chicken pox with the vaccine. Same as the flu. And yes, adults are now getting Shingles because they are NOT being exposed to chicken pox (from their own children). When a parent comes in contact with child who has chicken pox, the immune system builds another round of anti-bodies thus reducing the risk of shingles later in life. But hey, believe what you want. I had chicken pox as did pretty much everyone in my class and lived to talk about it. Society just wants to immunize every thing now and while for some people, it is needed (for example compromised immune systems), the majority of us can manage viruses just fine.
