i traded in my old mini cooper for a new one on march 31st at the dealership. a couple months later, san francisco municipal transit sent me a couple of parking tickets and an impound notice. in the space provided on the form, i replied that i sold the vehicle to a dealership and included a copy of the release of liability.
i just got a letter from SF muni saying the DMV either 1) had no record of receiving this release or 2) there was an error with the way it was filed, so i'm still considered the legal owner and owe them $75 in fees. my roommate said the burden was on the dealership to file the paperwork and i shouldn't go out of my way to do anything more, because the worst that will happen is when someone tries to register the car it will have fines on it. since i don't plan on buying the car back, he said just forget it.
i don't feel comfortable with that & am thinking of calling the dealership and have them sort it out or going to the DMV....he keeps telling me it will be a waste of time and to just forget it. what would you do?
