In a statement on the New Hampshire Pride Festival website, Nashua Chick-fil-A franchise manager Anthony Picolia said he was backing the the event, citing “positive relationships with family, friends, customers and employees in the LGBT community.” “It would make me sad if someone felt that they were not openly welcomed into my life or restaurant based on their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender,” Picolia explained. “Chick-fil-A at Pheasant Lane Mall has gay employees and serves gay customers with honor, dignity and respect. We also don’t discriminate in giving back to the Nashua community, donating to a wide variety of causes.” “I would challenge people to come have a conversation with me before they make assumptions or boycott my restaurant. Come to my restaurant and see for yourself that my team and I only have one mission: To serve exceptional experiences to all.” Market research firm YouGov recently found that Chick-fil-A’s BrandIndex score had fallen 40 percent nationally since Cathy told the Baptist Press that his company was “guilty as charged” of funding groups that oppose marriage equality. Last week, Fox News host Mike Huckabee said he was so outraged that “militant homosexuals” were attacking the Christian restaurant chain that he called for a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” on August 1. Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Wednesday told The Daily Caller that critics of the restaurant chain were guilty of “intolerance and bigotry.” “This is the kind of intolerance you’re seeing and it’s very unfortunate, but it’s the beginning of something that think I you’re going to see a lot more of as this issue — these issues fundamentally changing the basic moral foundation of our country continues to spread there’s going to be an intolerance for any dissent to that change,” Santorum said. Proponents of LGBT rights and marriage equality are also staging a “National Same Sex Kiss Day” at Chick-fil-A restaurants across the nation on Friday, August 3. “Head to your local Chick-fil-A and share a kiss with your sweetie,” organizers advised. “Let’s show Chick-fil-A that EVERYONE deserves to be able to fall in love, start a family, and take their children to eat fried chicken after a soccer match. ” Photo: Flickr/Alaina Browne

I'm sure there are lots of individual store owners that are pro-equality, but in the end, it's all lining Dan Cathy's pocket.

Even though I know the money would still go to anti-gay groups, I'd still go there to that store (if I lived there) and show my support to him and his staff for being brave enough to stand out and stand up for what they believe is right. That act of kindness shouldn't go unnoticed or ignored just because of the negative. He's doing the right thing.

Actually Chik-Fil-A is a franchise chain not a corporate chain at most if not all locations. These two things work very differently. With a franchise each location is individually owned. In order to gain the rights to build the store and sell the product an owner must pay a set amount (anywhere from $80,000-$250,000 depending on the franchise) upfront. Then on top of that they have to pay to have the store constructed which is usually another $50,000-$100,000. Only a very small percentage of the daily sales go to the CEO and his people (usually 4-6%). The other 94-96% goes to the individual owner and employee for rent, wages, and cost of product for the restaurant. This means that franchises make most of their money by having NEW store locations opened. Even if existing stores close Dan Cathy has already gotten his money out of them. It would be the individual owners that owe anywhere from $130,000 to $350,000 for opening the franchise and the employees that work there that would be hurt the most. I used to work as a manager at a franchised restaurant and can tell you when our store was in danger of closing the corporate division didn't even care due to the fact they had their money. Corporate chains are different in that it is corporate that decides where to put a new location and pays for the construction costs. There is no individual owner and all of the profits (minus rent, wages, and cost of product for the restaurant) goes to corporate. They make ALL of their profit based on sales of the restaurant and none up front. A protest against such stores would have an actual damaging affect on a CEO unlike a franchised Chik-Fil-A.

That is how many franchises work, but to my understanding that is now how Chick-fil-A works at all. My cousin runs a franchise and I know for a fact that he was not responsible for building his location, nor did he have to pay anywhere near that amount to open one (the cost was only about $5000). I also don't think the franchise is independently owned -- he was granted the rights to run a location but he doesn't outright own it, he is considered the "operator" not the owner -- Chick-fil-A gave him his store, gave him all his training, etc.

Yes, but maybe the idea is that Mr. Cathy may possibly change his mind/stop donating. This is the person's livelihood and it'd be difficult to just up and sell their business. So it is an attempt to level the donations..I think.
