SO: College students/grads did you intern?

Posts: 34079 07/15/2012 10:53 PM Hot Southernmess in a Dress	And what was/is your field of study? My first degree is in Photography and required NO internship. Nor, in hindsight, did it prepare you for much more than fine art photography.... My masters is in art education. Naturally I had to student teach for initial certification. However, in the education world it doesn't equal experience.

Then SR year I did: Aug - Oct: Internship at a small company doing research Nov - May: Systems Analyst Intern for a billion dollar company January - April: Web Developer/Project Manager for another small company April: Developer/Consultant for a medium sized company Just graduated in May.

Posts: 14317 07/15/2012 11:09 PM	I did one (required) internship, one practicum, volunteered AND worked two jobs in a related field during my Masters, and was one of the (I think) three of 35 people who was employed full time right after graduation. Too many people go to school and assume that they'll get a job with no relevant experience outside the classroom, IMO.

They hated the thought of me sitting on my ass every summer and they also didn't think it was productive if I worked at the mall or whatever usual summer jobs teenagers get. In high school, I interned at my neighbor's law firm - I basically assisted with administrative duties. Since I was all about law/politics I also scored an internship with Barack Obama's office back when he was a senator in Congress. That was seriously SUCH an awesome internship. I learned so much! I mean I didn't do anything important but was really cool to be in that environment. Towards the end of high school I became interested in medicine so I started shadowing a friend's dad who is a neurosurgeon, and my aunt who is an OB/GYN. In college I was pre-med. I did research at NIH every summer. It was paid work - I worked 40 hours a week all summer and made pretty good money. I'm really grateful that my parents pushed me to have internships at a young age. It helped me figure out what to do with my life. Also I was really lucky to live in DC where there were many opportunities for students.

So, it was definitely beneficial for me because while my cohorts were worrying about finding jobs and going to all the career fairs, I was working the career fairs as a recruiter for my company.

I would have done an internship even if it wasn't required... in fact, I interned for no credit at two radio stations for two summers before transferring into that program. I work in the music industry where your contacts and reputation are paramount. One company hired me at the end of the summer and I've been with them for 5 years now. Landing that internship was one of the best things to ever happen to me.

Posts: 3667 07/16/2012 12:19 AM	My major was fashion merchandising & my school required freshman & sophomores to do a month long (give or take) internship during the holiday season. At the end of the period, we had to do a report on the internship & what we learned & such. Junior year is totally optional to do an internship...I ended up working retail for the money. Freshman Yr: 5 week internship at the Gucci store in Manhattan, for the men's department. I was suppose to end on Xmas eve, but they extended me til a little after New Year's. To this day, it's still my best internship. Sophomore Yr: 5 week internship with a wholesale costume jewelry company in SoHo. I learned alot here, and at first, I didn't like it b/c I sat around all day & didn't feel so active as I did when I was at Gucci. Later on, this would be one of the internships that helped me decide what area I wanted to go into. Senior Co-Op: 4/5 month internship at MTV. It was a great learning experience, but I don't think I'd want to work for MTV. I was so worn out interning 4 days a week, then working part-time friday-sunday, that I couldn't really dedicate myself to the internship completely. But, I loved the people I worked with, but I wasn't really interested in managing a store stock closet. However, great for free stuff. After graduation, I kept my part-time retail gig & kept on interning b/c I graduated right when the stock markets went crazy. I interned two more times before landing my full time job. I seriously didn't have a life for about 2 years after graduation b/c of all the interning I did. But, I'm happy I did it. I got to find out what area in fashion I really wanted to be in. However, if you can, find a PAID internship.

My dream hospital offered me a full time position before I graduated and before my nursing board exam. My junior and senior year was eat, sleep, work, class and study. I have no interest in journalism anymore which is why I'm unemployed. I'm pretty sure if I didn't hate it, I would be Assistant Editor of a magazine by now. These places love internship experience and getting hired was never a problem for me. Now I am jobless and have no idea what I want to do.

I could find a job in my field after graduation, so I wound up accepting a paid PR internship with a pro sports team. I made a ton of awesome contacts.

That was a great learning experience for someone who hadn't worked a day in her life. Lol. I basically helped the sales guys with pulling items for their clients, cleaned up the floor for closing (refolding shirts/hang suits back up). It wasnt very glamorous, but I liked it & the environment was just wonderful. Good stepping stone for me. It helped me out when I ended up working at Bloomingdales for almost 4yrs. I love the fashion industry, and I hate it when people just assume its about shopping, when it really isnt.

Posts: 36488 07/16/2012 2:47 AM	Journalism. And no I didn't. I worked in college and was overwhelmed by last semester in school. I tried to get an internship at the end of my last semester. There was a woman who ran an advertising agency who really loved me, but for some reason she couldn't swing an unpaid internship for someone who wasn't in school. I'm not sure if that helped or hindered me. I got a job three months after graduating, but the economy showed up to fuck me over soon after that.
