Ahh, I used to do this. It's dialing into the backdoor for voicemail. I used to leave voicemails for people this way. It's a little more complicated since porting numbers came around, it's harder to tell what the backdoor number is.

For Nextel it used to be xxx-xxx-6245 (mail)

eta: The xxx-xxx is the subscriber area code and prefix. In a rare occasion that number wouldn't work, and you can normally dial in from another voicemail.
