"I made it very clear," she said, "that Mildred was not going to die of a dread disease looking as if a deb had missed her noon nap. The last stages of consumption, poverty and neglect are not pretty and I intended to be convincing looking. We pulled no punches and Mildred emerged... as starkly real as a pestilence." Katherine Hepburn, Irene Dunne and Ann Harding all turned the role down, because they were afraid the role would ruin their image.

Even though I think Richard gave a better performance than Elizabeth they were BOTH at their absolutely peak here and the supporting members were just as good. I was seriously floored at how well put together this film was. Richard's slow progression into the "villain" was jawdropping. You aren't intruding at all. I would say that is a classic, and it is one I haven't seen. Maybe we will get a chance to watch it later.

What would you say are Bette Davis' best performances? I commonly hear All About Eve but I'm always open to different opinions.

All the movies we have watched so far, I have not seen before. This week we are watching Of Human Bondage which is the movie that made Bette a star. I have also seen All About Eve, The Great Lie and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. I loved all of these movies, but I think her best performance was in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. It was actually not what I was expecting. I really enjoyed The Great Lie and decided to record What Ever Happened to Baby Jane even though the description didn't sound appealing to me. It said something about quarreling sisters who were aged past their prime. I was expecting a drama and not the crazy suspenseful thriller that it was. If you want to join us we take turns choosing movies each week.

Ironically, the same year, the Academy was bombarded with protests because Bette Davis (for Of Human Bondage) and I (for The Thin Man) weren´t nominated. They actually suspended voting rules for the first and only time because of the uproar, allowing members to ignore the printed ballots and write in any name. Of course, most of the votes had already been mailed in by then, so the winners, including Claudette Colbert, were official nominees. Bette has deservedly won a couple of times since, but I´ve never been nominated. They seldom give it to comediennes.” -Myrna Loy

Very much a classic. It was the third biggest box-office hit that year, won five Oscars including awards for both actresses, and when AFI revised their 100 Greatest Films list a few years back, they placed it at #67. (It didn't appear on the list the first time.) It's also one of the films that brought about the MPAA's ratings system in 1968 after the film was threatened with a condemned rating from the Catholic Legion Of Decency and refusal of approval from the MPAA - which it ended up getting approval after Warner Bros. promised to warn theaters not to allow minors to see it without adult supervision, putting warnings of adult content on publicity materials, and removing a few minor profanities - plus the Catholic Legion also refused to condemn it.

I'm still reeling from the "Getting angry baby?" argument and the George/Martha argument outside the dance place. I have a good idea for one! I don't think it's on Amazon Prime or Netflix, but there IS a version on YouTube and if you have Netflix DVD rentals, I think it's available there, as it's part of the Criterion Eclipse Lubitsch Musicals box set that includes his first four talkies - The Love Parade with Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier, Monte Carlo with MacDonald, The Smiling Lieutenant with Chevalier and Claudette Colbert, and One Hour With You, which reunited MacDonald and Chevalier. The Love Parade, The Smiling Lieutenant and One Hour With You all received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. The Love Parade is the only one I've seen so far and it's the one I'm recommending. The Love Parade (1929) - Watch on YouTube The film is notable as one of the first films to star Maurice Chevalier, who received an Academy Award nomination for his performance, the film debut of Jeanette MacDonald, and the first talkie directed by Ernst Lubitsch, who went on to direct classics such as Ninotchka, The Shop Around The Corner, To Be Or Not To Be (Carole Lombard's final film), and Heaven Can Wait. The Love Parade was nominated for six Academy Awards: Best Picture Best Actor - Maurice Chevalier Best Director - Ernst Lubitsch Best Cinematography - Victor Milner Art Direction - Hans Dreier Sound Recording - Franklin Hansen

But I do want to see The Love Parade. What say you Jellyroll? Do you want to pick this week or next week? Pick any film you want to watch. The Shop Around the Corner is one of my favorite Holiday movies. We will have to watch that in December. I also love Christmas in Connecticut.

One movie that I haven't seen of his is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, which is hear is great. The Shop Around the Corner also has the wizard from the wizard of oz. I adore Barbara Stanwyck, but I have only seen a few of her movies.

(For which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.) Baby Face, available on Forbidden Hollywood Vol. 1, is also a good one to watch. Love me some Jimmy Stewart. The Ice Follies Of 1939 is highly regarded as a super low point in his and Joan Crawford's careers, but I actually thought it was cute, if not predictable and hokey.
