I'll have to catch up - I didn't really watch anything this week. Of Human Bondage, however, is a superb film.

If y'all wanna see a good remastered copy, someone uploaded, in 10 parts, the Roan Entertainment Group version, which I believe was ganked for the Brentwood Home Video "Great Literature On Film" disc. Both are progressive clean transfers from a decent print.

Bette Davis became a star from this film, but she was snubbed by the Academy when they announced their nominations for Best Actress. This was one of only two years write-in votes would be allowed at the Oscars, and among those publicly supporting Davis were Norma Shearer, who herself was nominated that year for The Barretts Of Wimpole Street and Myrna Loy. Claudette Colbert won for It Happened One Night, with Shearer and Davis in 2nd and 3rd place. The following year, Bette would win for Dangerous, but it's often considered a consolation prize for lack of nomination for Of Human Bondage - the blame for that has often been placed on Warner Bros., who was embarassed that one of their contract players had made such a big critical splash in a film from another studio that they refused to mention it in any publicity for her.

Another interesting tidbit is that once upon a time, this was actually a lost film. When MGM was remaking the film with Kim Novak in '64, she requested to see it, only to learn that the negative had been destroyed. Fortunately, copies were found several years later.
