I could watch that over and over again. I could watch anything with Greta Garbo over and over. BTW I posted this year's TCM Summer Under The Stars schedule. We got our cable back just in time. GOD IS GOOD! There's gonna be so much good stuff this year. Some of the highlights for me: -Days for Marilyn Monroe, Lillian Gish, Myrna Loy, Deborah Kerr, Jeanette MacDonald, Ava Gardner, and Ingrid Bergman - all are goddesses and I need more of their work. -Some rare movies will be on during this time - Christopher Strong with Katharine Hepburn[/i], Raintree County with Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift, and Eva Marie Saint, Show Boat with Irene Dunne are the ones I'm looking forward to the most. Christopher Strong is only available through the Warner Archive Collection DVD-on-demand service, Raintree County is only available on a shitty bootleg in its shorter general release version, and Show Boat has only ever been on VHS and laserdisc. -GENE KELLY AND KATHARINE HEPBURN DAY

We will have to figure out a way to incorporate TCM Summer Under the Stars into our schedule too. Maybe we can start picking two movies a week? I don't know. That might be too much for everyone.

It's quite the enjoyable little underappreciated gem. I have the Criterion Eclipse Lubitsch Musicals set, but so far I've only watched The Love Parade. Love me some Chevalier, and MacDonald was so gorgeous and had such a beautiful soprano voice. (Believe me, not all sopranos are beautiful to listen to.) I'm waiting for her day on Summer Under The Stars so I can record the films she did with Nelson Eddy that I still don't have. I think two films a week during Summer Under The Stars would be great. Some may only want to watch one anyway, some may record one and watch it later on, etc. My DVD-R will be HELLA busy in August, cuz there's lots of movies on that I want and don't have. I'm sure as Hell not paying $25+ for a used widescreen roadshow VHS of Raintree County if I can record it off TCM. Judy should have been nominated more than twice in her career. Why she wasn't nominated for Meet Me In St. Louis, The Clock, or I Could Go On Singing I'll never know. Hell, I've got a busy week ahead of me for recording. Tonight they're showing some Leslie Howard movies, including one with Norma Shearer. (In 2010, she had her own SUTS day. I recorded damn near everything they showed and have yet to watch a damn one of them. ) Later this week there's gonna be 4 Barbara Stanwyck pre-code movies in a row - two of which were just released in a set from Sony and TCM. (She'll also be in one of the movies during a day of prison movies - mostly women in prison. I may have to catch some of those too. Love me some old school women in prison movies.) Just lots of great stuff coming up this week. I've missed my Turner Classic Movies.

In fact, this came out just two years after The Jazz Singer (which itself could be considered a musical of sorts), and in those two years, there was such an avalanche of film musicals that people stopped going to see them because they'd had their fill of movies that were nothing but a bunch of stage performances with no story or anything. The Love Parade was, however, one of the first - if not THE first - film musical that not only had a plot, but the songs were often relevant to the plot and integrated into the plot, as opposed to being performed on a stage. (MGM's The Broadway Melody also came out this year. However, while it had an actual plot, the musical numbers were still mostly stagebound performances. Didn't stop it from being a critical and commercial success and being the 2nd Best Picture Oscar-winner - this and Grand Hotel are the only two films ever to win Best Picture and not win any other awards, and Grand Hotel is the only Best Picture-winner to not even receive nominations in any other category.) The Farmer's Daughter (1947), for which Loretta Young won the Academy Award for Best Actress, is on TCM at 12:45 AM EST on the 25th. This title is not available on DVD and copies of the VHS tape are VERY expensive, so set your DVR's or DVD-R's or what have you. I'll be recording, as I'm not holding my breath for any DVD or Blu-Ray release anytime soon. In fact, Tuesday evening seems to be devoted to Loretta Young, as starting at 8 PM EST, they'll be airing six films with her. The one preceding The Farmer's Daughter is another one unavailable on DVD - Come To The Stable, at 11 PM EST. She received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress nominations went to costars Celeste Holm, who passed away just a few days ago, and Elsa Lanchester. (Probably best known today for her roles in Disney films such as Mary Poppins and Pollyanna. She was also the wife of Oscar-winning actor Charles Laughton and appeared in 12 films with him, including The Private Life Of Henry VIII, the film he won his Oscar for, and Witness For The Prosecution, for which she received another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.) Her autobiography, I'll Cry Tomorrow, became a film with Susan Hayward as Roth. It'll be on tomorrow morning (the 24th) at 4 AM EST. Susan received her fourth Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance here. (Her next nomination would be her last, but it resulted in a win - the film, of course, was I Want To Live.)

I think I'm going to watch A Star is Born early and discuss it when every one else watches it. I didn't have a chance at all to watch the Love Parade last week but I'm going to attempt to do it this week even if the discussion is closed. I hate being so busy all of the time.
