Brought my cat home from the vets last night to die

She hasn't been herself for awhile, still was eating and drinking but was losing weight. It got worse the last few days so I brought her in. He said she is dehydrated and is in kidney failure. He actually suggested in put her to sleep last night but I just couldn't. Bawled my eyes out when he told me that. So I have her home for a few more days then will bring her in Saturday. SHe's been an amazing, funny, quirky companion for the16 years I had her after getting her as a rescue when she was two. I haven't been sleeping well and spent the last 2 nights getting up every little while to go look at her and pet her but she's not herself, so although my heart is breaking I will be ready to say goodbye to her on Saturday.

Awwwwwwww I'm so sorry honey! *Hugs* I have a 3yr old named Gracie and she is my baby....I can't even think of going through what you are going through, but I know I will have to one day! I understand wanting to have some more time with her before saying goodbye. Even if she isn't herself right now, you will treasure the time you get to spend with her the next few days. Do you want to post a picture and show her to us?

I'm sure we'd all love to see her!!

Is she in pain? If not, why not let her pass naturally at home with you?

Unfortunately, most of the time in kidney failure, they basically just waste away. My friend just had her kitty put to sleep in January for the same reason. He was down to 3 pounds (formerly over 10).
I am truly sorry. I just lost my kitty of 14 years in February. He had cancer, FIV (which he had from when I found him), beginning kidney failure. He had surgery to remove a giant mass in his neck. He made it thru surgery, but went into respiratory arrest afterwards. I watched him wake up, so I left. I still feel guilt over not being there (even though it couldn't have been predicted), so if you think you are capable, I suggest being there when it's done. The bright spot for me was that I found two sweet new babies. They will never replace my Willie, but they have greatly helped ease the pain of losing my baby. You are in my thoughts *hugs*

I'm so sorry, many hugs. I went through this with my dog almost two years ago. Although he went on his own the night he came home from the vet, it was so hard to watch him take his last breath. It's so hard to lose a loved one, your heart must be broken. Just try to remember the wonderful life you gave her, and let those memories heal your heart.

Yeah, I just can't watch her waste away to nothing, although he said there is hardly any fat or muscle mass on her now. I know we'll both be ready by Saturday, but he also said to be prepared to come home from work and maybe find her in a coma which I almost hope happens. I can't stand the thought of leaving her alone at the Humane Society. They charge $200+ to put them to sleep if you are with them or $75 if you leave your pet there before noon and they do it later in the day. I'm on a tight budget after just paying out over $2000 for a Special Assessment on my condo recently. And I had to pay for the vet visit yesterday plus some morphine for pain as she hurt her foot. Sprained it jumping off something on Monday which is what prompted me to bring her in Tuesday as she was limping on it a bit. I did notice her weight loss and she wasn't eating as much the last few days but I was still able to entice her sometimes with chicken or tuna. She went through this last Fall also but after a few days of Whiska's Kitty Milk she perked right up again and started eating

Awww!! Same thing happened to me and my 17 year old cat about 5 years ago. It was so hard. Sorry you are going through this!

I have never heard of them charging more for you to stay! Of course mine were always at the vet and not humane society. It was also much less than $75. Private cremation and such was extra.

Doesn't matter where it is, the vet or the humane society, it's still over $200 to stay. That's why I opted for the Humane Society for the $75.

her ignoring me when I tried to call to her a few times to look at me when I took the picture. She liked to sleep in this spare room a lot.

This is the last picture I took of her. You can see that she was losing weight.

So sorry to hear. She is beautiful. You gave her a good life and she'll always be watching over you.

My sister just lost her cat of 16 years last week. She was definitely getting old, her senses seemed to be failing, but didn't have any serious health problems as of her last vet visit a few months ago. On Wednesday, she was unable to walk and was just meowing non-stop, unless my sister was holding her. Thursday night when my sister got home, she knew it was time.. she took her out into the yard, and sat with her outside until 4am when she passed.

OMG Your sister's story had me tearing up so much!! It must have been so heartbreaking for her but also how wonderful to know you held your pet in your arms and it died there feeling loved and held.

and she has the most awesome personality. Even my friends or family would come over and first thing they'd ask "Where's Tara?"

It was like I didn't exist. She was happiest when I had company over and there were people sitting in the livingroom and she'd be laying on the floor right in the middle of us all. She also is notorious for not letting me sleep in past 6:30. If I do she'd either jump up on the bed and star patting me on the nose while I was asleep, or go a safe distance out in the hallway (where I couldn't throw pillows) and MEOWL like crazy until I woke up. As soon as I'd get up she'd dance in between my legs knowing it was time for breakfast. In the winter she'd loves to spoon sleep with me. I'd often wake up during the night and she'd be fast alseep stretch out in front of me, hugged up next to my stomach etc.
