Do you hope for a better marriage than what your parents have/had?

Posts: 1005 06/17/2012 1:50 PM	My parents have been married for 30 years and they 'work' you know? They support eachother, they created a family and have things together. But, sometimes I wonder how truly happy they are together. Sometimes I wonder if they'd be better off not together. Though they modeled what "marriage" has meant to me for my entire life, I still I really, really hope my marriage is not like theirs. I hope that I end up spending my life with someone who I (appear to ) enjoy being with.

Posts: 22003 06/17/2012 1:55 PM	My parents have been married for over 40 years and have survived him being in the military, the death of one of their children, and a lot of other shit the world threw at them. They also seem like they still love each other which is shocking because most couples I know in similar situations are in "well, divorce would be too difficult" mode and are just together because that is what is expected of them and the easiest thing to do. So, I guess I would really hope to have the same marriage my parents have.

Not that I wanted to see them fighting, but my mom just pretty much let dad do all the deciding and never said the things I knew she wanted to say. When dad moved away and they later divorced, they married each other again a few years later, only to divorce again the following year. In between all that, I'd say every couple years Dad would move back only to decide this wasn't working and he'd move out of the state again. I would never want that to happen for me or put any of my future kids through that. .... Well, Happy father's day

Posts: 11562 06/17/2012 2:58 PM	Well, seeing as how my dad knocked up my mom and only married her because of that and has admitted to never loving her at all and divorcing over 10 years ago... yeah I'd have to say that I hope mine is better. Right now I'm in a loving relationship and we live together so I'd say it looks pretty hopeful.

They just celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary and through the ups and downs, they're still each other's best friends. They are a true example that a marriage is both hard work and effortless, can be fun always, and filled with love. I hope I am that lucky.

It's not perfect because people are not perfect, but 30+ years later and they still worry about each other, do things for each other, joke with each other, etc. I can honestly say that neither one of them is more invested in or lesser in their relationship. They are very selfless for each other (and their children).

They had to care for my mother's mentally retarded younger sister, my father is a recovering alcoholic, my brother is a Type 1 diabetic, so their relationship has taken some hits over time. They've been married for nearly 30 years now, and I know they haven't been exceptionally happy the whole time, but they keep coming out on top and together. I think they've really shown me what it is to fight for your marriage, rather than just bailing when things get rough.

Posts: 27531 06/17/2012 5:40 PM	Yes. My dad is helpless and expects my mom to cater to him. It infuriates me. Plus they only stayed together because of us, which is just sad. And now that we're grown, they're too financially dependent on each other to separate. I can't deal with that.
