Posts: 8739 05/21/2012 11:27 PM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I saw it today. It was better than Dark Shadows, but not by a lot. I was very disappointed, to be honest. I don't know why, since it's based on a game. I guess I was expecting something better, since Alexander Skarsgard was in it. He was still the best part of the movie, though. The rest was pretty darn laughable, but not really intentionally. If they can turn Transformers into a halfway decent movie, they should have been able to do it with Battleship, too. The casting sucked, other than Liam Neeson and Alexander, though. And most of the ship scenes looked obviously fake and a lot of the CGI was really bad, which was surprising for such a high budget movie.

I liked Taylor Kitsch, ASkars and Brooklyn. They tried, but the writing was just so bad that you could tell they didn't have much to work with. Rihanna was not good at all, but I expected that much.

Posts: 8739 05/22/2012 2:55 AM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Not that Transformers was Oscar-worthy, but I think it was SO much better than Battleship, largely due to casting and special effects. Casting the right people, who have good comedic timing, who don't come across as kind of stiff and trying too hard (which was the major issue with Taylor Kitsch, IMO), who can actually act (the problem with Rihanna), can turn an overly-CGI'd flop into an overly-CGI'd entertaining hit. ASkars was very good during what little time he was in the movie, same with Neeson (although, he was in it even less). The rest of the movie just wasn't well-acted or entertaining enough to get you past the MASSIVE gaps in the story line.

It's pathetic that Hollywood is trying to make movies based on fucking boardgames. Have SOME imagination. The some of the cast--Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna--was also eye-roll worthy. It looked like Pearl Harbor and Transformers had a CGI-happy lovechild.

Pick cheaper movies my friend. I wasn't expecting much from the movie, I knew going in it was going to be a cheese fest and it was. I can't really fault any of the actors on this one (though I did think Taylor and Skarsgard were kind of wooden in the beginning, until the action got started), the writing was pretty terrible but I mean, you're there to see the action which it had plenty of. It was a dumb popcorn movie.

The only one I've seen relating to the Avengers was Iron Man which was entertaining, but again, not my kind of movie.

Posts: 3595 05/24/2012 1:39 PM Reply Quote More Recent Posts	The general (unconfirmed) rule is that a film has to make 2 to 2.5 times it's production budget back to start making a profit. This takes into account the promotion as well as the theater take. Studios don't get 100% of the box office. Basically Battleship needs about $60 million more to make a profit. One thing to take into consideration is that studios don't just stop making money once a movie ends it's theatrical run. There's DVD/Blu-Ray sales, VOD sales, Cable and TV rights, merchandising and other sources of revenue. When taken into account I think it's clear that Battleship will eventually turn a profit. If it's enough to warrant a sequel is another question.

Its the blockbuster flop (in addition to John carter) that is being used as an example of blockbuster flop.
