My poor Piper :(

Posts: 8435 05/21/2012 2:17 PM	Took Piper to the vet this morning. She has been breathing really heavy and making these quiet crackling noises, when she tries to oink. The vet checked her over and said she has pneumonia. They are putting her in a nebulizer three times today. Poor baby girl is only 3 months old and I've only had her for 2 1/2 weeks. I hope I got it early enough that she'll be okay. I can't believe this is happening. I just lost Hershey and now Piper's sick. Does anyone know what causes pneumonia in guinea pigs?

Posts: 43200 05/21/2012 2:38 PM Biggest Know It All '09	Guinea pigs are meant to live in very warm climates. If you run the AC in your home or there is any type of draft at all they are extremely susceptible to URIs.

Posts: 3568 05/21/2012 3:08 PM	My roommate lost 2 guinea pigs to respiratory infections so from that point on anytime we had guinea pigs we covered the top, side and back of their cages with baby blankets to prevent them from getting any drafts from the a/c or open windows. If I ever get guinea pigs again I'd do the same thing because from that point on we never had any problems with them getting sick. I hope little Piper is okay.

Posts: 8435 05/21/2012 3:27 PM	Thanks for the advice. I put some blankets over her cage and I just cleaned out her cage. I really hope everything is okay. I'm hoping that I caught this pneumonia early that she'll fight it and overcome it.
