UPDATE! : I just cut out the shape of my new headboard!

Posts: 2851 05/20/2012 11:50 PM	I'm making a diamond tufted headboard, and the first step is to cut the shape out of a piece of wood. I used a jigsaw for the first time in my life. Here it is! What do you guys think so far? UPDATE So I'm finished tufting, I just have to staple the fabric and batting around the back of the headboard, so you can't really see the shape yet. I'm always impressed by how resourceful people can be. I think it's just the angle! I only drew one side, then traced that side on the other half so they would be symmetrical. Then I cut along the lines.

It's for a double (full). It's 54" wide and 40.5" tall. You can make it whatever height that you want, although you may have to sew two pieces of fabric together (like I'm doing) to cover a taller headboard. With regards to the width, measure your mattress as it's resting in the frame and then add and inch or two to each side so the headboard will stick out a little. It looks best this way. Feel free to ask any other questions!

I'd want the headboard to be a pretty good size, but I wasn't sure how to make it look good if I couldn't find a fabric that I liked that was wide enough to cover the whole thing. Do you have a way to hide the seam or are you just hoping it's subtle enough to not be noticed? Also, I agree with who ever said it before but I'd love to see the finished product! I'll have to keep an eye out for your tutorial!

Posts: 54622 05/21/2012 1:20 AM	i think it's really cool that you're doing this. making stuff is the best way to get the things you really want if you don't have a lot of money to blow. plus, it's just nice looking at something and feeling pride in knowing you made it, especially if it was a major undertaking.

I'll have to keep an eye out for your tutorial! I'm running the seam directly down the centre, and my button pattern has tufts located there. When the fabric goes into the tufts and pleats, the seam will go away. Just make sure you have AT LEAST 18" EXTRA FABRIC on each side of the headboard before you start. Using thick foam (I'm using 3") plus batting will use up a lot of fabric once the buttons go in. Hope this helps! Ask away!

Thank you! It's so true - I get this headboard in the shape I want it, with the tufts and hand picked fabric/buttons for a fraction of the price of one premade. It's perfect!
