What do you give your dogs to chew?

Posts: 17554 05/17/2012 10:11 AM	The only way to keep my pug puppy from biting the crap out of me is to give him something he can really CHEW. He ignores Kongs, Nylabones and chew toys after a few minutes. First he loved rawhide, but then I read online it was bad for them. So then I got the bully sticks but they're expensive and he can eat half to a whole one a day. Now I've read that elk antlers are ok to give and last longer. What do you guys give your dogs?

Posts: 29040 05/17/2012 10:16 AM WWFSMD	I haven't given my dog any in awhile and honestly, I'm not sure if they're good for puppies or not, but what about a pig's ear? You can buy them from most pet stores. I stopped buying them because the hair on them grossed me out too much

He's on his third monkey, they have the longgg arms and legs and he likes to beat the heck out of those things until he gets to the point of ripping the stuffing out of them and we buy him a new one, he chews on the ears a ton and just wrestles it. The bone is his favorite to chew, it's rubber and the ends are completely thick and rounded. I don't know where my husband bought it but I plan to stock up on those because he loves them so much and he can chew the heck out of it and it's lasted a while.

Posts: 3479 05/17/2012 12:23 PM	Aw, man. What's wrong with rawhide? I only buy the ones from the USA and my dogs love them. My dogs chew rawhide, pig ears, natural raw bones, bullysticks, and hoofs. The bullysticks and the hoofs stink to high heaven though. I'd like to try the antlers but they are pricey!

Posts: 6041 05/17/2012 12:41 PM	Rawhide is not digestible, so if your dog swallows a big piece and is unable to pass it, it can cause a blockage in their intestines. I give my dog bully sticks, the kind I get don't really smell. She's only ten pounds so one stick usually lasts her a pretty long time.

Posts: 5705 05/17/2012 12:57 PM	Rawhides are really bad for puppies. They have sensitive stomachs. I give bully sticks (make sure to get the "unscented" one or you may get a headache), antlers and the bones that meems posted or the knee bone ones. Antlers seem expensive, but they lasts for months.

So are most chew toys you find in Petco/Petsmart/etc. I give my dog raw meaty bones (knuckle bones, marrow bones, etc.) Raw is key because cooked and boiled bones become brittle and splinter. I also have used bully sticks but make sure you get it from a good source.

Posts: 17554 05/17/2012 3:20 PM	My dog is 13 weeks, 4 lbs and ate almost an entire bully stick in one day. He is just such a chewer. He chews for hours and hours. I ordered split elk antlers that a pug website I follow recommends. They say that they last a long time. They were expensive so I hope he likes them.

Posts: 14319 05/17/2012 8:24 PM	We get deer antlers from a hunter who simply gives them to us, and my dad cuts them into manageable pieces with a bandsaw. I also buy my dogs raw knuckle bones from a local butcher treats from Nothing Added (http://nothingadded.ca/), which is one of the few companies I trust when it comes to pre-made dog treats. They are currently chewing on pizzles (the ones I buy are "U" shaped, so it takes them way more time to chew them). They also love tendons and duck feet.

Buddy LOVES the lamb chop stuffed toy - he is obsessed with it, and of his about 25 stuffies, he brings this to bed every single night! He's on his second one (he doesn't chew them, he licks them thoroughly ). I'm going to buy the mini=lamb chop for my girl, who loves smaller toys.
