I too am a Christian who supports gay marriage so I'm glad President Obama finally stated that he supports gay marriage. Of course, it would have been more meaningful if it wasn't so close to the election but he's a politician trying to win an election so the timing is no surprise.

He's a severely weak alternative and even Obama-haters know that. They might not be voting FOR Obama but they're not going to be voting for Mitt.

Repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell and telling the DOJ to stop defending DOMA is him not doing anything about it? He did that before he even came out in favor of this today. This is actually a case of him DOING before saying. As for him losing votes, over this, I don't see that happening. The latest poll shows that 50% of people are in support of same-sex marriage, as are a lot of moderates and independents. I think the only people this would influence not to vote for him are the people who wouldn't vote for him anyway.

I can imagine he will lose a chunk of his votes from people who just won't go to the polls over it. When Prop 8 was up in the last election (I wish I had the percentages) a lot, if not most of the black folks who voted for Obama, also voted for Prop 8 to pass and ban gay marriage in California according to exit polls.
