This guy I just started talking to, just constantly gives me compliments and I feel like it's so fake and forced and and when i call him out on it, he apologizes and gives me another compliment. I can't stand it. I just find it really uncomfortable and I don't like complimenting people either. He also tries to make me give him compliments. He asked me if I thought he was cute and I told him no , which is the honest truth. He just has a REALLY nice body. And he just laughs. And he's constantly sending me pics of his body so I can say how good he looks, but I never do. I feel like a jerk, but otherwise I like him.

It is extremely uncomfortable to be around someone like that. Do you ever notice him looking down at people who are overweight or aren't always dressed to impress? I used to work with someone like that and she was exactly like Regina in Mean Girls. She'd be all "OMIGOD your dress is SO beautiful!" and go on and on and on and then as soon as the person was out of earshot be all "that is the ugliest effing dress I've ever seen". And she was obsessed with weight too. You could gain 50lbs and she'd be all "you look amazing! did you lose weight?!". This was a grown ass woman too and I know for a fact she was just doing it to boost her own ego and get other people to compliment her. So phony and stupid.

But I go to the gym too and I'm losing weight and he doesn't seem to mind. That's how we met, through mutual friends and I was asking him stuff about working out because he works out so much. I think maybe it's an insecurity with himself.

I used to feel uncomfortable when my coworker did that, I couldn't imagine if it was someone I was dating. Maybe you could talk to him and hopefully he'll tone it down? If he really likes you I'm sure he wouldn't want you to feel uncomfortable. And there's nothing wrong with you feeling the way you're feeling.

He always says stuff like this and it's a major turnoff. I'd stick around with this guy to see how he is when he's more comfortable with you and not trying to impress but if that doesn't change, I agree with the above person who says you aren't compatible.

I don't think she should break up with the guy because of it, but if that's how she feels and she really likes him otherwise then a simple conversation with her being honest with him could help. It doesn't seem like she's saying she doesn't want any compliments at all. And if he really likes her then he'll respect her feelings. I hope it all works out for the OP And on the flip side, I've been seeing someone who doesn't offer any compliments ever We haven't been seeing each other very long at all though and I know he's pretty shy and most likely nervous when we go out so it doesn't bother. I honestly haven't even thought about it until just now reading this thread. Plus we haven't gone anywhere that hasn't been casual. It would bother me if we get dressed up to go out and he doesn't at least give me a little compliment though. We shall see!

It's like people (in general) just TRY and find an excuse, or reason NOT to be with someone, or continue seeing someone etc. Like they're TRYING to find faults that may, or may not even be there because it seems to be the "cool" thing to do these days. (Finding any little nit picky thing as to why someone should be dumped or rejected.) NOBODY is perfect, so people should stop trying to find someone who is. As far as the OP's original situation, instead of making a federal case over it, why not just talk to the guy, tell him you appreciate the compliments, but at times you think he goes a little overboard with them, and they begin to lose their lustre. Even too much ice cream can make a person sick. At least talk to the guy before you do anything drastic. He may turn out to be a great guy, and I'd hate for you to lose the chance of a possibly great relationship because the guy gave you TOO MANY compliments. Maybe that's just how he is. Which again is why people should stop trying to find someone who THEY think is perfect, and quit looking for faults in other people all the time. Look for reasons why you SHOULD possibly date the guy...not reasons why you SHOULDN'T! Think positive!! Good luck with the situation.

Posts: 1625 05/06/2012 11:29 PM	So I talked to him tonight and explained the whole compliment thing and when we hung up he sent me a text saying "I know you don't like compliments but.." and gave me a bunch of compliments. I can't win. I feel like he's more trying to prove he's a good guy because he's been in trouble when he was younger. I'm just going to try and not let it bother me and hope he let's his true self come true so I can actually decide if I really like him or not.

It does take a while to get to know someone for the person they really are so hopefully when the real him comes out he'll simmer down with the complimenting and you'll feel more comfortable. That's so weird though that you'd tell him it makes you uncomfortable and then he gives you a bunch of them all at once. I would have texted something back like "um...were we not just in the same conversation?"

It sounds like it is all in your head & that you lack self esteem. Also in your initial post you said "no" to thinking he was cute. If you are not attracted to him & he annoys you so much then why are you wasting time on him?
