My dog hasn't wanted to touch dry food since Thursday morning. Yesterday afternoon I got fed up and bought her some wet food to mix with the dry but now she she will only eat the wet and leaves the dry food in her bowl. So now I'm at point of - do I go out and buy her cans of wet food, cook her chicken and rice, or leave the dry food in the bowl until she is hungry enough to eat it? Oh, and the dry food? It's a new one because it was taking her all day to eat her old food that she didn't want anymore. The damn dog acts like I'm giving her poisoned food. She will literally eat anything else including the cats food (dry) and treats (also dry). Is she just being a picky little bitch? smiley: laugh

She may not like the food.. Try small bags until something clicks. But beware I am done with Taste Of The Wild.. another food recall and tired of the bullshit. I have heard good things about Precise and used it before as well...

Once in awhile a day or two may be normal but it's been too many days..

Well here's the thing - she is eating food but just not dog food. I hate going out and buying another $20 bag and have her reject that as well. I have no idea what else to do. I don't want to take her to the vet because it's not like she is starving herself.

Do they pet stores sell small little bags of food to try? I can't remember ever seeing them? Should I try another Blue Buffalo? Break down and buy her canned food? What else can I mix her food with?

How about stop mixing her food, giving her canned food, cooking and feeding her people food, and just keep serving her the dry food, only? I mean, animals by nature won't let themselves starve. Dogs eat poop, for crying out loud (by choice, not as a means to survive). She's got your number, obviously. She knows if she won't eat the dry food, you'll keep switching, mixing, changing, cooking for her, etc.

Just get the food you think is best for her and serve it. If you leave it out all day normally, keep doing that. But don't give her anything else. Don't mix. Don't give her table scraps. Nothing but the dry. If you normally serve it at a specific time of day/evening, same thing.

If, after three or four days, she hasn't eaten any of the dry food and you're sure she's not had anything else to eat, then call the vet. But I am pretty sure she won't get past day two without diving into the dry food, as long as you stick to your guns. Dogs CAN go three, four, or more days without food. But they won't do it if they have a food source, such as healthy, available dry food.

I know the pet store here has little sample bags of food you can take for free. Maybe go see if you can pick up a couple different brands and try them out?

Try putting chicken broth on her food. There is also sauces you can buy to mix with dry food. You could also try just putting a little water in the bowl with the dry food, some dogs just prefer softer food.

This. If shes eating when you mix stuff with her food, shes just being a brat. Now she just wants treats and special food. The more treats/canned food/people food you give her, the less likely she will be to eat her normal dry food. Just make sure she has a good brand, healthy food left out and she will eat when shes ready. Also, by changing her food like this, you are setting her up for tummy trouble. You can't just switch her food over like that.

My dogs are not at all picky. They eat everything. But Rachel Ray's is what I feed mine and they love it. You don't have to switch their food, but I remember when my dog was a baby I bought some brand that he devoured and a couple days later he wouldn't eat it. I switched brands and he loved the new brand. Sometimes it can be the brand.

Maybe she's having tooth problems and the dry food hurts to chew? Might explain why she's going for the softer stuff. Or like someone else said, she's just being a diva.

I did that and she smelled it and ran the other way! That's when I was like, WTF is her problem?

And the reason I give her "people food" (cooked chicken and rice) is because that is what the vet has recommended in the past. About a year ago she had what turned out to be gas (and a $420 vet bill) so the vet suggested that I cook her chicken & rice anytime she either has stomach problems or doesn't want to eat. I only buy her canned food about twice a year as a special treat when I'm going out of town and I know she won't eat for anyone else. She has weight problems so I don't give her table scraps or crap food. I'm going to make her run tonight or hike to see if that makes her hungry. smiley: laugh

The only other thing I can think of is that she might have problems with her teeth? The new vet I wanted to take her to has a "new patients free" promotion so since I want to switch vets I might take advantage of the promo to rule out teeth issues. Freakin' dog.

Aren't you supposed to mix the old with the new until they get used to it then phase out putting the old in . That is what I did when I switched my dogs food.

my sister's dog will NOT eat her food unless there is absolutely nothing else to eat. but that's mine and my mom's fault for mixing human food in. she's trained that way. my sister yells at us all the time for it. she'll let the dog starve before mixing human food in.

Update: I dumped out the old food because it had gotten mushy due to the wet food & chicken broth being mixed in and washed her bowl. She is now eating. She is such a little bitch.

Dogs are picky. Mine is sick right now and will only eat treats. I make rice (one of her faves), try to give her yogurt & peanut butter and nothing.

Also, the large chain pet stores will let you return food if your pet doesn't like it. I've done it a few times.

Thanks all.

She will go through periods of not wanting to eat when it's really hot out but it's only in the 80s here now so I was worried it was something else. Looks like she just wanted a fresh dish.
