If it's a good friend, then tell them you prefer the formal name.

My son has gone by his formal name since birth due to my assistance. When people tried to attach a nickname to him, I said "His name is ___, not nickname." I didn't care what people thought ... I wanted them to call my son what I named him.   And, I wanted my son to choose the nickname he wanted of the two possible nicknames associated with his name.  He's pretty much stuck with his formal name. 

You'd correct someone if they were mispronouncing your name, so why not correct them on this? You named your child what you did for a reason and she deserves to be called what you want her to be called!  

Personally, I am not fond of one of the nicknames associated with my son's name.  So, why should I let people call him that if it's not his given name or the nickname I've chosen for him?  If I wanted people to call him by a nickname, I would've called him by that name myself. 

I never nickname other people's kids.  I call them what their parents call them.  If Mom calls her daughter "Katie" instead of "Katherine" then I will follow suit.  But, if she calls the child "Katharine", then I will call child the same thing.  Don't assume that I want you to call my child anything other than the name I've given them unless you hear me use that nickname first!
