What are things from US Pop Culture that puzzles non-US people?

Posts: 8798 04/25/2012 11:10 PM	air conditioning and refrigeration! We use AC pretty liberally in the US, in Europe I was shocked to learn that many buildings don't use AC like we do. Same with refrigeration...in france especially they leave a lot of stuff out in the open. Also the concept of buying food in bulk & buying pre-packaged/ready-made food is pretty American too..I guess people in other parts of the world are more used to buying food in in small quantities more frequently - hence not that high of a need for refrigeration and freezing. Grocery stores are also much smaller in other parts of the world.

Posts: 10902 04/25/2012 11:21 PM	What exactly did you write on hip hop and rap? I've been to a few foreign countries and rap music is what they liked the most, especially the younger people. Almost every song in the clubs were hip hop and even what they listen to everyday. They knew more about American rappers than we did lol It's super popular

She contemplates then hand her her credit card. Not knowing that she was asking about the bags. She was used to only plastic bag option. It's quite a laugh.

Posts: 3058 04/26/2012 4:59 AM	Not really pop culture but coming from Australia the whole tipping thing is hard to grasp. I understand why it is done but it is not something we do here. We also pay at restaurants when we order so it felt weird to just leave money on a table after a meal.

The only time ice is good is when you get free refills If I'm getting something to drink that doesn't get free refills and is most likely coming from a refrigerated container, I ask for no ice. I was my $3 worth of soda/tea/lemonade/whatever

Here we wouldn't tip at a bar ever, and although it's good ettiquette to tip at restaurants, it's not really a big deal if you don't. I worked in one for a while and you were lucky if you got a couple pounds for a £80 bill. The way American's are about tipping is bizarre , and I appreciate that it makes up a lot of a water/waitress's wage, but here it doesn't really which is why British people probably don't tip great when they're over there, but don't mean anything bad by it.

No idea how you eat that British chocolate (Galaxy, Cadbury's) is like a different product, so much nicer. (imho) That said I wish we had Twizzlers, Cheetos, Tostito's and Pop Em's over here

The ones in the brown package that say HERSHEY across it (which we don't have in my area...not sure about the rest of Canada) taste like the candy kisses, which are gross, but the milk chocolate bars are yummy. That being said, Cadbury will always be the best

This was my major gripe with studying abroad in London - Continental Europeans generally have no sense of personal space at all. It's really interesting and I think it really says alot about our (American) culture vs theirs.

I did because 1- the theme this week is music. 2- Enjoying rap/hip-hop is not the same as understanding it. It has a whole history, social relevance, and unwritten rules. It's not just about the beats/sex/product placements that get most of the attention in the last few years.
