What are things from US Pop Culture that puzzles non-US people?

Posts: 16026 04/25/2012 10:02 PM	Something you need to know the rules of to understand it. And I'm drawing a blank. With all the technology and information available it seems like nothing belongs only to the US anymore. I just need something to writing prompts/ideas. Even more fun, something that would puzzle an alien from another planet?

I have had to explain a lot of cultural references, customs, and phrases that I stupidly assumed the world knew about. Of course, it depends on the country and even region though.

OOH...I would love some examples. I have to write a brief essay that I have to post tonight. I'm drawing blanks for some reason. I thought of reality shows - but I wasn't sure if that was a good example.

Posts: 9904 04/25/2012 10:09 PM	As for me, growing up in a foreign land... I do not know a lot of the movies/ tv shows people my age (90s) grew up with. I do know about Rugrats, Barney, Seseme Street and Nickelodeon stuff but things like Mr Rogers, Clifford, etc until I came here. Same for movies. I never watched Clueless... etc etc.

Well, my class is Popular Culture so it's best if it's something pretty current or if in the past I have to compare it to something current. If it will help, the theory is about how knowing vs. no knowing the rules of something changes the meaning of it. Like if you don't know the rules to chess, you can't really understand the game or play it correctly.

My town has a huge hispanic/latino population and we have the basic grocery stores and hispanic ones. I noticed the difference.

They were absolutely baffled by the idea of roasting a marshmallow over the fire and just the whole thing. It was funny to explain it to them, but they loved them!

They were a bit baffled by most of the menu and politely asked us to explain what hush puppies and okra were. This was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. It was only after I Googled okra later that I discovered it has different names in different places - it just never occurred to me.
