Posts: 11429 03/18/2012 5:57 PM	I've had the same doctor since I was 16 and loved her, but my insurance changed so I had to find a new one. I was so comfortable with my doctor, now I feel nervous like I did the very first time I went for an obgyn appointment This is a little TMI, but one of my coworkers has been to this doctor and said she does rectal exams which my other doctor never did so this should be a new experience and my anxiety is already kicking in even though my appointment isn't until May

Posts: 8800 03/19/2012 9:57 AM	If you don't want a rectal exam, then say so. They can't force you to do one! Maybe when you go in there, explain this situation to the doctor and ask if she can take it a little slow, explain everything that she's doing, etc.

Posts: 8800 03/19/2012 12:10 PM	Can I ask why you guys have anxiety about going to the gynecologist? Are you guys ashamed of being naked, or having someone touch your vagina? I'm asking because I'm a medical student and I'm just curious. I've never been afraid of the gynecologist because I see it as a necessary medical checkup and I see no reason to be weirded out. I mean the doctor went to school for years and is trained in professionalism. There's actually something empowering about going to the gyno for me...like I'm taking charge of my own health by voluntarily getting Pap smears and what not. Yeah its invasive but it's something good for my body, and it's just a vagina! Edited 1 time by JCinWrappingPaper 03/19/2012 12:12 PM.

Posts: 3808 03/19/2012 12:18 PM	I have anxiety when I go. I hate being naked except for a paper gown and just sitting for what feels like an eternity waiting for the doctor to come in. I hate the exam and the small talk during and everything. My favorite part is when it's over and I have 364 days until I'm subjected to it again. Some people don't like being probed. A lot of people don't like going to the dentist too. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Posts: 2576 03/19/2012 6:57 PM	OP, is your coworker older? (like 40+?) I only ask because I work for an OB/GYN and the only patients I ever see get a rectal exam are older patients as a screening for colon cancer.

Posts: 13059 03/19/2012 7:39 PM	I don't mind the gyno one bit. I think I've had a rectal exam a handful of times when there, but it's not part of my Docs normal routine. It's a well-lubed gloved finger, as long as you're not clenching your ass you'll be fine, lol.

I guess I'll just see what happens and if she says what she's going to do before she does it I'll tell her I've never had that done before and see what she says. I always have anxiety before I go for my annual exams too. It's always extremely awkward and uncomfortable and sometimes a little painful. I always schedule morning/early afternoon appointments and take the day off from work when I go

Posts: 4641 03/20/2012 10:45 PM	I went for my yearly today. I love my doctor and I love the small talk. Takes my mind off the exam. It never hurts (ok, it did the first two times I ever went) and it's over in a matter of a minute, really. Mine doesn't do a rectal but I've had it done by my gastro doc and even that's not so bad. I must say, the practice my dr. used to be in used paper gowns that only covered your chest area and then you go a piece of paper over your lower half and now we get full length fabric gowns and I'm so much happier and more comfortable.

Posts: 5039 03/20/2012 10:54 PM	Oddly, I've felt more uncomfortable at my regular GYN doctor than when I went to Planned Parenthood. The regular GYN was abrupt and judgmental (with absolutely no reason) , while PP had a doctor who listened and was more thorough.

Posts: 4624 03/21/2012 1:05 AM	I haven't been in like 4, 5 years. I don't have any issue with dr's I guess I just don't care, and I haven't been involved with anyone in a few years either so I just don't see any pressing need.
