If I don't have wi-fi somewhere, I can either play games on my iPad or read a book/magazine I've already downloaded.

They could share the 3G connection from their phone, for example. I only got a Wi-Fi iPad because I figured I always have wireless Internet at home, at school and downtown, and if I'm somewhere else and I really, really need to go online on my iPad instead of my phone, I can just share the connection with my phone. Saves me from having to get one more subscription. The iPhone (4 or 4s) makes it really easy to share the 3G connection, and I'm guessing Android phones do as well, but I have no idea. Look into tethering.
