I watched the movie last night at a screening in Los Angeles and Gina Carano was there for a fun Q & A after. I was surprised at how good it was. To be honest, I expected it to suck at least a little given that Carano isn't an actress. She is now. Seeing how different she is in person compared the the character she played on screen was rather eye opening. Even the tone of her voice is different. Now onto the film. It's a fantastic action flick. Carano plays a CIA operative named Mallory who is on the run. I won't say anything else as it's good not knowing much about it. If I were you, I wouldn't watch the trailers. For being a novice, Carano's acting was adequate. But what she truly excels at is martial arts. The fight scenes in Haywire were raw and real. I think the Fassbender fight sequence will resonate the most. Channing Tatum, who I can't stand and wish Hollywood would stop trying to make happen, didn't annoy me here. However, he's not in the movie much, so that's probably why. Seeing Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas in this was a treat. As was Ewan McGregor who once again, vanishes into his role. Bill Paxton is in this as well, but for only a couple scenes, but he's effective as Mallory's worried father.
I shouldn't have doubted Sodebergh. He knew what he was doing by creating this film with Carano in mind. He made sure Carano had additional training, roughly two months with the marine corp and stunt coaches. Carano told this interesting story on how this former agent would tail her, therefore making her paranoid like an operative would be. She said being in that anxiety ridden frame of mind totally helped her.
I hope the film does well, as I believe Carano has what it takes to be the next female action star. She'd defiantly make a great Wonder Woman.
