Frankly, if she tells you something like that, she could (or could have) told someone else the same/similar story, and if it's along the lines of what you're implying, that could be very damaging to his reputation. Even more so if he's in a position of authority. If you ARE his friend, I would approach him about it, but maybe not at work? Either call him or ask him to grab a coffee or a happy hour drink and just say "So I was talking with Mary the other day at lunch and we were talking about this awful news story that we saw about a racially charged event. I'm not sure what prompted Mary to tell me this, but she told me soandso story about you and she said thisandthat was on your cell phone. I just think something like that, even if true, shouldn't be shared with people at work because if could be offensive to some people. I'm just wondering what your thoughts were when you decided to share it with Mary?" If you go about it by asking him if it's true first, he'll probably deny it to you (seeing as he hasn't shared it already with you). But if you act like you believe it, then he'll have to either deny it happened at all (which is what someone would do if they never said/had those kinds of things) or explain his thought process if it is true. And if it's not true, he needs to handle the fact that Mary is saying things about him that could be damaging to him. And if it IS true, you need to know that because you consider him a friend.

Why is it "leave it alone" because it's someone else? She said she considers this other person a friend. If someone is accusing your friend of being racist, don't you think you should let your friend know? Especially if he/she has given you no indication that they are, in fact, a racist? Is it different because these are coworkers? I don't understand why people would think she shouldn't say anything to her friend, who is in a position of authority, that someone at work is saying things about him that can/will negatively affect his reputation?
