Okay, I've been working at my job for about seven months. I've become pretty close with several people there (hanging out outside of work and all that), but in the end, we're still co-workers, so I'm not sure how to handle a situation, if it should be handled at all.
I was eating lunch the other day and another girl, we'll call her Mary, was in there, flipping past news headlines. And there was a news story about something racially charged, can't remember which story. And we were kind of talking about how crazy it is that certain people still think that way. And she told a story about a high school friend she had to cut off when she realized the friend was racist - in this weird way that involved her religion.
And then she said, "It's why I'm not really friends with Jack either." Now Jack is another co-worker, and out of everyone there, he's one of the ones I've grown closest to in the last several months (I went to his house to celebrate Christmas even). So I was like, um what.
And Mary told this story that started with Jack saying, "You like racist jokes, right?" And then he showed her this horrible picture on his phone that someone had texted him, I guess. And she described the picture, and I'm disgusted.
But I'm also confused because it doesn't sound like Jack at all. Not the Jack I know. But maybe he only reveals that to people he thinks would be okay with it?
And it's not that Mary is a proven liar, but she is definitely a shit-stirrer and untrustworthy. So part of me wants to think she made it up. But that would be a ridiculous thing to make up, right? That's clearly just me in denial, not wanting Jack to have done that.
Should I ask Jack if it really happened? He'd have to know Mary is the one who told me. The only thing stopping me right now is I'm worried about it causing trouble at work. (Oh, Jack is also a manager, so he's higher than both Mary and me. He's not really our direct manager, but he has enough power that he could get us fired, for example.) But I also can't see dropping him as a friend without talking about it first.
Okay, so typing all this out has made me decide I'm going to ask him if he really did share that picture with her. But also, since I typed it out, I'm going to post it. So do tell, WWJJBD?
