It's like any other gov't program or company policy. If you don't qualify for it, you don't get it. I don't know that just seems ridiculous to me. You shouldn't get a six month break from work for no reason.

Shit, slaves used to give birth (sometimes in the field) and strap their newborn on their backs as they continued to work. The months allowed by many jobs is overkill if "necessary" at all. Maybe they could give the same paid leave to those that choose to have surgical procedures (ie lifts, bypasses and such).

Nuva, I'd give your argument partial credit if at least the reality was that other circumstances (e.g. medical, bereavement) where given such generous time off (52 weeks + 55% of salary). However it's not, and the message that it's sending is that having a baby makes a woman and her partner special, and they deserve special benefits and perks, which is bullshit!

We have to stay until 7 now on some days at work and as soon as 5:00 rolls around people start whining they need to go. No, you don't NEED to go. You WANT to go. You knew days before that you would be leaving at 7, meaning you made arrangements with your family that you would be home late. One day a week of staying late is not going to ruin your child's life. I promise you. And then what about your husband/wife/mother/grandmother/whoeverelse that always takes care of your kids when you're not around? You act like now suddenly they're not qualified to babysit your kids because you have to work an extra 2 hours. This topic obviously angers me because it's happened way too many times to me.
