because they wore pants/jeans upto their waists. now jeans are down to the hips, which is why most people have muffin tops.

I think that a lot of actresses had a very thin waist because it was part of the beauty standards of the time just like celebs nowadays are expected to be toned and skinny. Maybe some of them did corset training too?
