We'll call him Bill. Bill has a huge (wonderful!) dog, and in the past, the dog has occasionally gotten away from him. I'd find the dog, and bring him home. Bill is 90-years old, and a super sweet old guy. After the last time the dog got loose (probably a year ago) I bought him a new leather collar, and a nice ID tag with his name, and Bill's address and phone number etched into it. When I brought it to Bill, he almost started crying, he was so happy and thankful.
Last week we got a call from the manager at the senior dining center, who told us that Bill was very sick. She knew to call the police department, because Bill had mentioned me before at the senior dining center, and told everybody we were friends.
The last week, I've been going to Bill's every day and visiting him for an hour or so. A couple of nights last week, I brought him supper too. On Monday night, Bill was especially bad. He told me he just "didn't feel good," and he was scared. I asked if he was scared he wasn't going to be make it through this sickness, and he said yes (he almost started crying.)
That night, Bill called his neighbor, who brought him to the ER. Everything checked out fine, I guess, and I gave Bill a ride home.
Fast foward two days..... I went to see Bill today. He's doing much better. A home health nurse comes and sees him every day, and he's on oxygen now. His daughter and some other family members were up on Tuesday and Wednesday to visit him. They cleaned his house, did his laundry, etc.
He was SO thrilled to see me today! He told me how he didn't know for sure if I'd show up today, and how he really enjoys my comapany since he's been cooped up in the house the last week. When I was there, one of his daughters called. He had me talk to her. I told her who I was, and she said, "Are you the one that gave him the collar?" LOL I told her yes, and she was extremely thankful for me watching out for her dad, and taking care of him while he's been sick.
He is such a nice guy. I was devastated when I found out he was sick!
