Today was the first day working at my new job. I was assigned to work in the extended care class room. When it was time for lunch, the teacher and I set up the kids' places and everything. Once the tables were set up, she asked who wanted to say "grace." So apparently, this was an everyday thing. A little girl raised her hand and she gave the blessing for the meal. During it, I didn't close my eyes and barely bowed my head. For one, I'm not religious, and two, I don't think it's appropriate for that to be going on. This is a state-sponsored program. Anyway, one little girl asked why I didn't close my eyes. She obviously didn't close hers either, but that was a difficult question for me to answer when it came from a small child.
Is this common in state-sponsored programs? And would it be considered unethical?
I'm not a God-hater or anything. I just don't think it's appropriate for a government-funded program. I'm sure the teacher wouldn't have forced a student to give the blessing if he or she didn't choose to, but I don't know. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
