i just hate the internet in this case, because there are hundreds of horror stories online but i'm not finding any resolution from people saying whether it ever turns around.

I went off the medication and eventually my hair did get back to the way it was before. I hope the same happens for you. It also really sucks that your drs aren't being more helpful. I guess this is something they aren't used to dealing with?

Sometimes people don't come back to report their progress because by then the problem is resolving/over and they have moved on. Don't always assume the worst.
I wish you all the best.

doctors just piss me off. well GP's anyway. i really hate saying that, but i've just never experienced one to be useful or helpful with any conditioning I've EVER had. And I am just so grateful that I've never had a life threatening illness. Maybe they are more effective when you're dealing with a specialist, but every GP I've had has been dismissive, or just quick to prescribe meds. it's so disheartening to feel vulnerable and scared and have someone react like you're wasting their time.
