Chapter One © 2002
She was walking down a busy street in New York City. Which was not a good thing, because she had shopping bags. She walked down near another store and heard, "Look at that... so fat and ugly." Erin turned to see a bunch of teenagers sitting on the ground with disgusted looks on their faces. She felt tears sting her eyes. She was a little overweight. She was 5'8. She has redish brown hair and greenish blue eyes. She was always teased about her appearance. She wasn't watching where she was going and tripped over something. The teenagers just laughed and walked away. A few stay tears fell from her eyes.
"Are you OK, miss?" She heard a gentle male voice ask.
She looked up at the stranger with tears in her eyes. As his face registered in her mind, her mouth fell open in shock. The man was Joshua Scott Chasez from *NSYNC.
"Oh, god... could this day get any worse?" she whispered to herself. She looked down at the ground.
JC kneeled down and put his hand on her back.
"You need some help?" he asked.
"Yes... thank you," Erin replied quietly. She never wanted to ever admit she needed help. Ever. She started to get up with his assistance.
"Oh, @#%$!" she exclaimed as she stood on her left foot.
"What? What is it?" JC asked with concern.
"My ankle... I think it's sprained," she replied with pain in her voice.
"Lonnie, could you pick up her bags and put them in the car?" he asked a tall, heavily-built man who suddenly appeared at his side.
"Sure, man," Lonnie answered as he picked up Erin's shopping bags.
"Wait... what are you doing?" Erin asked JC.
"I'm goin to take you to the hospital..." he started to reply but Erin cut him off.
"NO! No hospitals. Please... I could just call my friend Becca... damn, she isn't home." Becca was her best friend and room mate. They had known each other ever since they were in diapers.
"OK... well, I'll take you home. Where do you live?" JC asked as they slowly made their way to his car. Erin took out her wallet and gave him her license.
"OK... Lonnie, can you drive?" JC asked him. Lonnie put Erin's shopping bags into the trunk.
"Sure." JC gave Lonnie the keys and helped Erin in the car.
"You don't have to do this," Erin said quietly once the car started up and they were on their way.
"I know but I want to," JC smiled. "What's your... I'll just look at your license," he continued as he looked at it. "Erin Banfield… it's nice to meet you," he continued politely. "I'm Joshua Chasez but you can call me JC." He stuck out his hand. Erin looked at him shocked and shyly. NO ONE had ever been this nice to her. Why is she so shy, he asked himself.
"I'm not gonna bite," he teased. Erin slowly placed her hand in his and shook it. He smiled hugely.
"Nice to meet you JC," she said as she blushed.
"We're here," Lonnie announced.
"Let's get you out of the car," JC said as he opened the door. He got out and helped Erin.
Lonnie got out her bags and was waiting for them. They made their way up to the apartment. Erin fished out her keys and opened the door. She leaned on JC the whole way in there. Her foot was killing her. Lonnie dropped the bags on the floor and plopped down on a chair. JC helped Erin down on the couch.
"There you go... safely home," he said to her as she got comfortable on the lounge.
"Thanks... to both of you," she said to the both of them.
"It's cool... point me to the kitchen," JC said.
"It's over there," Erin said as she pointed to where the kitchen was.
"I'll be right back," he said as he walked away to the kitchen.
"Umm... Lonnie is it? Thanks for helping me out with the bags," Erin thanked him politely.
"No problem. It was nothing," he said nicely as he smiled. JC returned with an ice pack from the freezer.
"This will help," he said as he came over and sat next to Erin. Erin kicked off her slip on shoe and reached for the ice pack.
"No, I'll do it," JC said as he picked up Erin's foot and placed it in his lap. Erin winced in pain.
"Oh, damn, I'm sorry... this may be a little cold," JC warned as he placed it on her ankle. She hissed in discomfort.
"A little cold!!! You think that was a little cold!!!" she said almost screaming.
"Well, I'm sorry... it's gonna help ease the swelling," he said with a small smile.
"What? What is it? Is there something on my face?" Erin asked worriedly. Great... just what I need, something on my face that's not my face she thought to herself.
"Has anyone ever told you you look cute when you're angry?"
"Well... ummm... no... no one has," she stammered.
"Well, it's true," he continued. Just then a mobile phone started to ring. Lonnie answered it and left the room.
"Don't you have some where to be other than here?" Erin asked JC.
"Nope. I'm all yours... um... I mean, I'm free. I can hang here with you for a bit?" he asked.
Erin blushed knowing what he was asking. He wanted to spend time with her. HER.
"Sure... well, Becca should be home soon," she said with a smile. "She is the best... she is always there for me," she said with a smile on her face.
"She must be something," JC said. Just then Lonnie came walking in.
"I have to go Jayce, you cool gettin' back to the hotel?"
"Yeah, man, I'm cool. How are you getting back?" JC asked Lonnie.
"Someone is picking me up, if you need anything call me," he answered.
"Aye, aye captain," JC joked adding a small salute.
Erin started to giggle.
"It was nice to meet you Erin. I'm sure I'll see you in the future," And with that, Lonnie left.
"Do I hear a laugh?" JC asked looking back at Erin.
"It was too funny, JC. I just had to laugh," Erin said when she stopped giggling. Then confusion set in.
"Did he say 'see you in the future'?" Erin asked JC.
"Well, yes," JC started to say, laughing slightly.
"Took you long enough... well, you're with me now, girl," he continued. "Besides, you can't escape me... I know where you live," he tried to say in a scary voice. Erin started to laugh as did he.
The front door opened and in walked a very worried Becca. Her blonde hair was thrown into a messy bun and her green eyes were clouded in worry. She heard laughter coming from the lounge room. She sighed a sigh of relief and started to make her way into the room.
"Erin Bonnie Banfield! You have no idea how worried I was about you! Where were you, I was waiting forever at the bus stop!" Becca almost screamed. She came to a halt at the entrance to the lounge room.
"Oh my god! Erin! What happened to you?" she asked as she walked over and sat on the coffee table not noticing JC... well, noticing him but not knowing who he was.
"You know how much of a klutz I am Becca, I tripped and sprained my ankle," Erin replied. Becca looked at JC.
"Your JC Chasez...," she whispered in amazement.
"Yes... and you're Becca, the best friend," he said a kid like voice. Erin started to giggle watching the scene unfold.
"Could you do something for me? Tell Justin that I love him and that he needs to leave Patrica for me?" Becca asked him.
"Yeah, I guess I could do that," JC replied with a laugh.
"Well, I better get going," he announced.
"So soon?" Becca inquired.
"Yeah, I'm a busy man," he said as he gently pulled Erin's foot off his lap. Becca caught Erin's sad look as JC finally stood up.
"Well, Erin I'll see you tomorrow... and Becca, it was nice to meet you. I'm sure I'll see you soon, too," JC said. He winked at Erin and walked away.
Once Becca heard the door close she started to ask Erin questions.
"Oh, my god! Where did you meet him? Why did he come back here? How CUTE is that man?"
"I met him just outside a store, I fell over and he helped me back home as did Lonnie. And he is a real cutie," Erin answered as a slight smile formed on her lips.
"How did you fall over?" Becca asked. Knowing she couldn't lie to her best friend Erin started to answer.
"Well, I was walking and I guess there was a stick or something I and tripped," she lied. She was never good at lying.
"You're lying," Becca said as she looked at her friend closely.
"Damn, you caught me out," Erin said with a small smile.
"I can always tell when you're lying, Erin. Just tell me what happened today," Becca said seriously. Erin could still hear the teenager's cruel words in her mind. Tears stung her eyes.
"OK. Well I was just walking... and I was happy for once. And I heard someone say 'so fat and ugly' so I looked over at who said it. It was just a bunch of teenagers and being the big baby I am tears came to my eyes. I wasn't watching where I was going and I
tripped. They just laughed and walked away," Erin explained as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Oh Erin. I'm sorry," Becca said softly.
"No. You don't have to say that, Becca," Erin said quietly as more tears fell from her eyes.
"Erin...," she started. She kneeled down near Erin. "Come here," she continued as she wrapped her arms around her best friend to try and comfort her. Erin started to sob. Becca couldn't believe how cruel people could be. How could they be mean to such a kind, warm, caring young woman? Becca asked herself. Tears also stung her eyes as she listened to her best friend's cries of pain.
Little did they know JC stood leaned against the wall near the lounge room listening to it all. JC couldn't believe his ears. He had come back to give her his mobile number, but then he heard them talking. He didn't mean to eavesdrop, but he wanted to know what happened to her. And he was pissed. How could teenagers be so cruel to such a sweet girl, he asked himself. He took a peek around the corner.
"Everything is gonna change for you Erin... everything," he whispered. He left his number on a small table and walked away, leaving the apartment formulating a plan.
