There are several reputable articles out there that discuss how Nielsen fudges the numbers and /or completely ignores certain facts for various demographics. It was obvious that CW wanted to change their demographic- and they did. The least the network could have done was be honest about why they canceled the show and not feed the fans and actor's bullshit lies or drag out what they deemed the inevitable.
