The son of Ryan O'Neal and his family were turned away from the funeral that day held for his father's long time lover and friend the iconic beauty Farrah Fawcett by Ryan's request. Griffin reportedly drove 300 miles to pay his respects; Ryan O'Neal specifically requested his son be banned from the funeral. Griffin believes that Farrah would be upset to know he wasn't allowed to attend her funeral, "She's mad right now that I'm not in there," he said. "I just wanted to say goodbye to someone that I knew and loved for 33 years."

Ryan accused Griffin of "wildly swinging a fireplace poker" at him, an action that allegedly caused an injury to Griffin's 22 year old pregnant girlfriend, JoAnne Berry.[2] In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Ryan O'Neal charged that his son grazed him "four or five times" with the fireplace poker and that when he ducked to avoid the swinging weapon, Griffin "hit his own girlfriend in the head." Ryan O'Neal added that he got "nervous" because of the woman's pregnancy. "I fled to my room," he says, "and I got my gun." When Griffin pursued him anew, says Ryan, he fired his gun "into the banister" to scare Griffin into fleeing.
