If I received via email a SAR from FAFSA saying I am eligible for a Pell Grant of "Up to" a certain amount, does that mean I am getting that amount
or just whatever my school will need? I am financial aid illiterate

Generally yes. It depends on the school though. Financial aid questions are hard to answer specifically unless you're speaking to someone at your school.

Does your school send out award letters? It's usually a few weeks after that.

Ooooh. Yeah in that case it depends on the school also.
On the other hand, where I work, we don't do that. Students have to meet with us and we go over their tuition and fees and financial aid with them, run their fafsas for them, etc. |

I'm considering going to grad school in the spring and this post inspired me to do my FAFSA.
Funny how now that I actually work in financial aid, it's much easier to do it. I remember doing it when I was in college and feeling totally lost. Now I'm just like, bing bang boom, done. |

Smokey, grad students don't get pell grants though! I found this out the hard way.
I am getting a buttload of Stafford loans. 20K a year, to be exact
(although 12K of it is unsubsidized).

Oh trust me, I know! Which sucks cause I have a 0 EFC. In order to be eligible for the federal student loans you have to complete a FAFSA though.
The school I plan on going to will be mostly covered by the subsidized staffords, so I might only take those. Depends though. I'm trying to figure out what to do with my life. And I'm not too thrilled about my job, so I'm considering leaving at the end of the year and working on campus part time hopefully. |

That's why I'm always in all the financial aid posts. I try to impart my knowledge wherever I can, cause that shit is so confusing. |
