I'm looking into adopting a dog and I've never owned one on my own. I've heard about pet insurance. Is it worth it? What company is good?

My sister has it and it's come in handy but by that same merit, she pays $50 bucks a month.
I think it's a better idea to put $50 in a jar every month and consider that your vet money b/c there are certain restrictions with what you can and cannot use your insurance for. Also, from my experience with dogs, they don't tend to require a lot of vet fees until they're older, so putting aside 50 bucks a month in your jar, that's 600 a year....over 3000 by the time they are five... Anyways, that's what I plan to do when I have a dog just b/c I found with my sister's insurance, there were too many restrictions and why pay someone else $50 bucks a month when you can pocket it yourself? |

My mom has it and she said she saved a bunch when it came to getting her cat spayed and helped with the price of the shots.

PetSmart has a really nice well-care program that covers all kinds of preventative care, vaccinations, annual teeth cleaning, free office visits and discounts
on meds. They have different levels of programs for different prices.

Yes. We got it and thank God we did. She ended up having something wrong with liver and needed a surgery which cost $5,000. Insurance covered I believe 80% and
if we hadn't purchased the insurance before we found this out, we would have had no choice but to leave it as is and hope she wasn't in any pain.
We've also had like 2 x-rays done for her which were roughly $500~ and both of those were covered by the insurance. They covered the meds and check up's. So in all honestly that $50 a month saved our asses and I can happily say that my baby girl is healthy as ever and should she need any more medical attention in the future we know that we can provide it for her. |

We have it. The same morning we got it, my puppy was attacked by a swarm of bees, swelled up like crazy, and had to be rushed to the emergency vet since it
was a holiday and his vet was closed. He also had his allergy testing done through it ($800) and he has so many allergies that his monthly shots ($400/year),
pills (about $200/year) and prescription food - yes, FOOD! - ($500/year) are partly covered.
Keep in mind though, that if your dog is in the top percentile (my dog is in the top 5-percent) then your percentage of benefits lowers. For a while he was covered for 100%, but they dropped it down to 40%, now it's back to about 50%. It's worth it because he's had so many issues, and it gives you peace of mind, which is invaluable in my opinion. Whenever you're nervous, you can bring them to the vet - you don't have to hesitate because of the potential cost.

I have pet insurance for my cat and i got it at the ASPCA its very good and costs $16 a month.

I need to get pet insurance. My dog just had a hernia a few weeks ago and had to get surgery or she would have died and it ended up costing $4,000! It was
ridiculous but I had to do it because she's only a year old and has so much longer to live.

Lbwants that is alot of money that you spent, but our pets are worth it. I spent almost $2000 on my cat when he had a blockage and was in a lot of pain poor
baby. Anyway the insurance is definately worth it....Glad your doggie is better.

I have a Shar Pei. I wish I had gotten insurance on him through his AKC thingie (both his parents are registered and crap so if I had registered him something
along the lines of some good insurance plan and so many days for free --- it was one big package). He's had almost every Shar Pei problem available, and
even though he's perfectly fine and healthy and he's been super strong, every time I go into the vet it's like... great. And if something major
happened to him I always freak out about how I'd have no money to help him... Well I could get it but it would make living HARD for a few months. I think
for emergencies like that insurance would be heaven sent.

I have one for my dog who is now 4 years old. It's been worth it for me. Before he had insurance, I had to pay hundreds of dollars because he had an ear
infection when I first got him, worms, etc. Even when nothing was wrong with him, I had to pay like $50 just for the vet to see him.
Over the years, he's had xrays done (he likes to chew on random things and would get blockages  ), labs drawn, comprehensive exams, etc and most of
them's completely covered by insurance.
I pay like $35/mo. I don't really care about the cost. I wanna make sure my dog's taken care of in case he gets sick... he's my baby.
