This post is making me think I should be tested. That it's just like a pap and he's going to scrap off the cells on my cervix. Not to worry about it because my cells are still normal and everything else is fine. I think with all sexually active women in their 20s he gives STD tests to on the pap. So I guess that's how it came up. I never asked for it, it's just included in my pap.

Posts: 28605 (06/27/2009 1:08 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore	HPV is very common...the majority of men and women, will have it at some point during their lives, even if it isn't detected on a pap smear because some strains are naturally destroyed by the immune system, some manifest as warts, some manifest as the strains that lead to precancerous cells. It sucks that you got it, but the vaccine is clearly defined as only protecting against 4 particular strains, not all. And also, vaccines aren't 100%, unfortunately. People who get the flu shot can still get the flu.

Here in Europe, it's seen as absolutely normal to have cervical abnormalities, it has nothing to do with your sexual behaviour. I had abnormalities after only one partner and apparently that isn't unusual. The fact it's so common and hard to prevent is precisely why we have a national screening programme - we don't have that for STDs like chlamydia for example. Are you aware that over 7 out of 10 men have HPV? It's practically impossible NOT to be exposed to it if you're sexually active. It's so common, it's not even really considered an STD here. I don't get the American attitude towards it at all. It isn't a big deal. I'm just grateful that they caught the abnormalities early. What does it matter who gave it to you? If your boyfriend has been with people before you, he most likely has it. Anyone with more than one sexual partner probably has it. It's pretty much unavoidable if you're sexually active. wtf.

I am American, but I am also confused by some of the attitudes concerning it. Like, defending against being a whore if you have it? Wanting to scream at the guy you deem as the one who gave it to you? Huh? It feels like people act like it is Aids or gonorrhea.

When I was told it had been detect on my exam, I was just like, "Well...hopefully its not the cancerous strands" but continued on with life. I told my boyfriend and had to explain to him that men are only carriers, but don't get it themselves (well, there's an increased population of men in prison getting HPV, but that's a different matter) and that I might have gotten it from him, I might have gotten it from my ex shurgs I told my Mom...she freaked out and didn't realize why I was so calm and seemed VERY freaked out when I explained that everyone who's sexually active will have some form of it at some point in their lives, so its not that big of a deal.

I'd be so mad if people were insinuating I was a whore because of this. Over here it's really not a big deal. You go in, get the cells burned off and get on with your life and feel happy that you discovered them before they turned into something worse.

Reading that article almost makes it sound like a girl that's a virgin could just hold hands with someone that has it under their nails, then if they end up touching themselves, they could get it. My sister once told me that her gyno told her that he had had a patient (Without mentioning any names) that was a 68 year old nun, that had hpv.

Now you are saying you tested positive for HPV but your pap was normal...
