I think everyone in this post is keeping it very civil, surprisingly. It hasn't gotten snarky or rude yet. We're just discussing different viewpoints.
So if you don't want to say anything else, don't. But I don't have to stop asking questions if I still have them.

I understand where the OP is coming from. I'm not crying or deeply affected over our tragic loss because I have a lot more things in life to cry or think
about.
However, if others want to cry and mourn, that's is totally fine. Nothing wrong with it. He had a lot of influence on many people. |

Maybe I'm having a harder time because it's not as if Michael Jackson was also a fantastic person. There was so much controversy about his race and
relationships with children that it bridges a greater gap between the connection I would potentially feel for him. The fact that he was a great artist is not
lessened by this, but it does make it more difficult to see "the deeper meaning behind his art and its impact."

I stayed up to 3 watching videos on mtv and bet and I woke up at 7 and started watching videos again. Micheal was the first artist I ever loved and I can't
really grasp that he's dead. I don't think i'm going to out and out bawl until the funeral though.

Very few people in this world have any right to judge what kind of a person he was. Nothing has ever been definitively proven and I don't think anyone
really knew him.
I can only speak for myself, but I am mourning what he was to my life musically. As someone said last night, many of you weren't alive when Thriller was released, but I was and it was monumental. He was the epitome of a superstar.....there was nothing like it and I've yet to see anything compare to it. He changed the game when it came to how you see and hear music today. Without him, you may not see music videos the way you do now....everything he did was an event and it wasn't like you see today with other artists. No one could touch him. I can equate every song he released with some memory of my childhood and that doesn't happen often. |

being saddened by a death. Everyone has a right to mourn whatever they want to mourn and I recognise the great loss to the music community as well. I however,
do not feel deeply saddened by this and don't feel I should have to justify that. People at work this morning are saying "Michael Jackson died! Why
aren't you sad?!?" It's very sad when someone dies and I feel for those people who are affected by his death but there should be a mutual
understanding between those who are deeply saddened and those who don't feel quite as big a loss.

Actually, I didn't cry but I was at first shocked and then just felt very sad about the entire thing. But I have to say I did cry when John Lennon was
murdered in cold blood especially when they had the candlelight vigil in front of his apartment and people were singing "Give Peace A Chance". So I
can understand how some people may feel teary over MJ.

I'll stick with my love for Marvin Gaye. His music has touched me a lot more than Michael's and he died before I was even born.

OP, does someone's personal life prevent you from listening to their music? Johnny Cash cheated on his wife, Elvis did drugs, Kurt Cobain shot
himself...should I not listen to their music or be affected by their words because they weren't "fantastic people"?

I am actually so saddened by this. He was also a part of my childhood memories and even as a teenager.
This man is a freakin' icon and musical legend. He has given so many people so many memories throughout his career and transcended generations. Of course some will feel a connection and cry over his loss. We just lost one of the greatest entertainers of our time. Some of us grew up to his music and it had so much meaning to us depending on what significance it had to each of us. I do not know why some find it awkward or weird for some people mourning or crying over public and celebrity figures. Depending on what impact they have had on you, you feel a connection to them because you watched them on TV and grew up with them, so it is as if you feel like you know them and feel a bond with them. It is a completely natural reaction, especially to someone as huge as Michael Jackson who is the ultimate superstar. |

When did I say that you couldn't enjoy their music? I'm not judging people or criticizing them in any way. I was just trying to understand their grief. |

JustinRandy131 wrote: First of all people are still mourning over Elvis death and they didn't know the man personally. Also with the legendary beautiful Princess Diana and there were people sobbing who did not know her personally as with Farah Faucet and other people who those watched over years and years in the entertainment industry. Do we all know personally the presidents of the u.s. but of course I saw plenty mourning going on at President Ronald Reagen's funeral. Heath Ledger's sudden death John Lennon, as well. It's always more hurtful and painful when your favorite celebrity dies suddenly. People still mourn Selena and held visual after visual when the member of her fan club shot her to death at a very early age and her career was kicking off. If you don't understand then there's nothing to say. Perhaps you cried over books and movies but you hardly know the characters and certainly not on a personal one on one with the actors. It's very emotional to lose people you admired. These are people who touched your life on days when you were sad or when you just needed to focus on the good and entertainment they gave you. You don't have to be on a personal level with them. Just knowing how they influenced your life with music, acting and other things stiil hurt. |
