simply do research and you will know how religions arent cults. in differing them there is a fine line btwn the 2. but there is still a line there. a separation many choose not to see
Is scientology really that diff from other religions?

Well if you want to get all semantical-like about it, let's visit the first listed, most widely used definition of the word:
Most religions don't fall under that definition, and let's not get cute, #1 there is absolutely the definition that this thread/discussion is operating under. If you REALLY want to go over the definitions, three out of the six describe fanatical, unusual behavior, two describe your garden variety religion, and one gets artsy. |

You're all kidding yourselves with that "Christianity isn't the same as Scientology!" garbage. It's all the same. They go about things
differently, sure, but in the end people believe what they want to believe and it's all a crock, whether it's about magical virgins or aliens.

Pliant Pinapple has summed it up best for me. The generalizations in this topic are running wild. |

DoesThatSparkle wrote:I guess when I think of a cult, I think of Waco, TX; Peoples Temple; Heaven's Gate, etc... and I think about how they started, one person or a couple people who have an idea and convince other people of this idea and then how it escalates into mind control and in the end, death So it's hard
to digest the idea that ALL religions are cults because I don't see that kind of time line in Christianity or Buddhism or whatever. But I was doing some
reading and ended up on Wiki (yes I know, not a good source) and looked up "cult" and there was this paragraph...
Many religions have been deeply influenced by charismatic leaders, such as Jesus, Martin Luther, Saint Francis of Assisi, John Calvin, Joseph Smith, etc. These leaders are either the central teacher and founder of the religion (e.g. Muhammad, Jesus, or Gautama) or reformers or prominent persons. Failed or violent new religions were also founded by charismatic leaders, such as Jim Jones. Very interesting to me. The idea that a lot of religions are influenced by one person, kind of like what I said above about what I thought a cult is. But again, when I think of a cult, I think of people who just don't think for themselves, they all huddle together and it's them versus the world. Maybe that's an awful way to look at it but that's what I think. I will say though, yes, there are a few of those people in Christianity and other religions, incapable of thinking for themselves and following 100% behind a pastor/father/priest or book. I have a couple like this in my family and it does kind of scare me, their thinking. As a Christian, I know that I'm looked upon by some as crazy because I believe in what they think to be a fictional person but I believe in what I believe for myself and no one else and I don't think I'm in a cult. I think for myself, I think outside the box, I don't think it is my place to force my beliefs on anyone, I don't think it is my place to think I'm above anyone because of what I believe in, I don't think that laws should be made in this country based on Christianity or any religion and really, I think of myself as more spiritual than religious. And now that I've probably made no sense and I wrote this almost an hour ago and forgot to click "post" I send this out and bid you adieu
