Is scientology really that diff from other religions?

They can claim to be of a faith and then horribly misrepresent it for money; that doesn't mean they are representative in any way of your average church member or of the church's beliefs. It's one of the more fucked up ones, but still, definitely a religion. They make people pay, so what? No different from the other arbitrary rituals in other religions. It's all BS anyway.

I know you're pretty MR, but do you really think a Web site of a certain church would list out "Forcing and pressuring our congregation to tithe!" in their list of objectives? i didnt say i looked on their website did i?

I am sure that many southern Baptists don't feel the pressure to donate large sums of money, except maybe at "bellevue Baptist". That is not a typical Baptist thing to pressure people into giving money.

I'm not claiming to know everything there is to know about it, but I have been reading a site someone linked a few days ago, to those who grew up in "the church" and even they say it's a cult. Those in Scientology are hiding greedy motives behind a somewhat nicely painted picture. (like when they say they want a better world. OK.. who doesn't?) However, their way of going about all that, I find very strange. Kids are not important. They're not even allowed to SEE their parents. They work all hours of the day and night and only get paid like $5 a WEEK. In other religions, I've never heard of families HAVING to give up everything they own, including family members who are not part of Scientology. (except other CULTS, where they live in the middle of nowhere) No religion is perfect and there are going to be people within any given religion who are going to do crazy and stupid things. But this is how Scientology works, period. To take a child away from their parent/s and anyone who isn't a part of Scientology is crazy to me. These people are brainwashed to give everything they have and get nothing in return. Yes, people are going to believe what they WANT to. And I honestly hate to think that Scientology is wrong, since that is judging someone else's beliefs. But, like someone else mentioned, L. Ron Hubbard simply made this all up with the INTENT to make money. He did it as a joke but ran with it when people actually fell for it. I do apologize if I haven't made sense... I haven't been to sleep yet. I should've just stuck with, "You can't convince me that Scientology is a religion." lol. Yeah, I don't think it should be compared to Christianity.

This is all very well said and I agree with you 100% on each of your points Pliant, thanks All of that IS true, but you have to remember that Christianity has existed for thousands of years in a lot of forms not nearly as open and free as it is today. You can't really compare a religion that has existed for thousands of years and has shaped the world we live in to a religious that has been around since what, the 1950s? If you're going to compare the two, you need to compare early Christianity to Scientology today... which has some pretty similar qualities. IA

There's a great deal of autonomy within each church, and views on how to interpret the Bible, use money, and design worship vary widely. The convention has 10 major position statements that define Southern Baptist thought, and none of them deal with money. It's difficult to define a typical Southern Baptist church... because every member church is so different. I grew up in a Southern Baptist mega-church, and money was not a defining feature of the church experience. People (obviously) gave, as evidenced by the beautiful campuses, the amazing church services, and the number of missions that this church supported, but there were also a lot of people who had very little who were leaders in the church ranks.

I can't even break down your statement into coherent terms because so much of what you just said is false and ignorant. I believe religion is one of the single most things wrong with the world today, and the cause of much distress, death, hatred and war. Of course religion relates to me when the followers of a lot of religions act the way they do. Not all followers act this way, but a good enough majority do, and a very large majority use religion for grounds of discrimination (gay rights, for example). So, of course it bothers me. Do I lose sleep over it? No. But this is a message board where people discuss things, debate, and even argue. It passes the time. If my topics bother you so much, which apparently they do, maybe you should just put me on ignore. Eh, false. You could say some followers do act this way, but the majority don't. You just might like to think so because when bad things happen, there's a lot more press and news on the subject. You know, don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch, so to speak.

I can think of two things that are similar in both: lack of access to the teachings except for a few (there wasn't any effort to make the Bible available to everyone until Protestantism) and indulgences (where you could pay to be forgiven of your sins).
