We are going to San Francisco for the first time and I'm looking at different places to stay. I'm the one that's arranging everything, so I get to say where we can stay. I found 2 hotels that i like but are in different areas. I know nothing about the city so I don't know how different the neighborhoods are. One is in Fisherman's wharf area (near Lombard st) the other is in downtown (near Market) What would you recommend to an inexperienced tourist? lol

Fisherman's Wharf is kinda, sorta a bit away from the downtown area, so you might have to add a few more minutes to your travel time when going to destinations. BUT, it's in a nicer area than downtown and the views are pretty nice. Market Street is in the heart of downtown, so you could do a lot of walking to your destinations. BUT, the last time I was there, that area seemed really dirty and there were quite a few homeless people hanging around. So, I guess which is more important to you: convienence (Market) or a nicer area (Fisherman's Wharf)?

But if the wharf is cheaper just stay there, you could probably take the cable cars to market. I'm not from SF but I've been a few times.

No nightlife stuff, half of the people going are still underage, so it puts a limit on the type of places we'll be visiting. Everyone wants to stay in Downtown, but i wasn't sure, seems kinda sketchy. I won't have a car either, so we'll be traveling mostly by bus, which sucks. i've been reading some of the hotel reviews online and on travel websites and they scared me a bit they keep saying that if you stay downtown people will rob you and attack you lol I i have no problem with homeless people or poor neighborhoods, i've lived in dumpier areas and in downtown in my own city, but these damn reviews are getting to my head. Thanks guys for you comments!

SF is a good public transportation city (I actually would have suggested you not drive, anyway) and the buses and cable cars can get you around pretty easily. Seeing as the group seems pretty young, I think safety should trump convienence. And really, it's not like FW is farrrrrrrrrrrr away or anything. Staying there would just add on about 10-20 more minutes to the trip to a destination. And for Alcatraz, the boat to it is right there at FW, so that would be pretty easy. Again, as far as getting around, pretty much any place you stay in SF, you're going to be able to get to other places by either bus or cable car. Have a great time, SF is so beautiful!

I like the wharf area better, only because it is VERY much for the out of towner, but more of what you say you want to do is in that area. Puplic transit here is good so you can get around with ease.

Downtown is dirty and the homeless people out there are scary

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza and took the free shuttle (ours came about every 15 mins) to the airport which has a BART station. From the BART we went to Union Square, Chinatown, and trolleyed to Fisherman's Wharf. Granted you'll have to walk a little and wait a little, but that's what tourists do anyway! The BART doesn't go to the Golden Gate Bridge, but we rented bikes and rode there (we also took a boat cruise).
