It will never change. DUI punishments in this country aren't about punishment and preventing future occurrences...it's about money, and only money. If they wanted to cut down on DUI's, they could...very easily. But they don't because then states would lose a lot of revenue.

Hopefully you want penalties for driving while on the phone, texting, eating, putting on make-up, smoking, all the strange things people do that could possibly impair their driving. Could get tricky if they are on medication as well.

Uh, no. But I'm saying any of the things I've listed can be just as deadly as drinking and driving...so they all should have the same punishment.

I do agree with that (surprisingly I agree with you - this slightly scares me). There are studies that show driving 10-15 miles over the speed limit, so 80 in a 65mph zone, is the same as driving with a .08-.09 BAC. I don't know how it is in other states, but driving 80mph on the freeway in CA is the norm. If those people get into an accident and crash or hurt someone, the penalties aren't the same as if they had been drinking with a .08 BAC, and they should be (the same punishments). It's a sticky situation, because I feel all those things listed above are negligent, and if you are caught doing it, and especially if you hurt someone, then the punishments should be the same as a DUI. People only single out the DUI, though. All are equally dangerous in my eyes.
