Brad Pitt For Mayor?
Movement Picks Up Steam With T-Shirts, Viral CampaigningNEW ORLEANS -- The Brad Pitt for Mayor Campaign is picking up steam. WDSU NewsChannel 6 has learned there's a movement in the Crescent City trying to get the actor elected.Brad Pitt made the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in the city and his non-profit is 'Making it Right' in the Ninth Ward. But will these accomplishments be enough to make him mayor of the Crescent City?"I'll take a Brad Pitt for mayor T-shirt please," said Melissa Neuman, a tourist from Boston. She stopped by Storyville T-Shirt shop along Magazine, which is creating a story of its own."Totally cute, I'm really excited about my Brad Pitt for Mayor T-shirt," said Neuman. The T-shirts are the hot-ticket in town. A Tulane University professor started the idea this spring."Professor Thomas Bayer made a homemade T-shirt and wore it to Jazz Fest and then came into the shop and said, 'You should make this T-shirt. This could really start a movement," said Josh Harvey, the owner of Storyville. So they started making t-shirts and before long, they were making headlines."It was in a British paper then an Indian paper, then Chris Rose picked up on it with the Times Picayune and wrote about the international story which made it a big local story," said Harvey. It's now drawing thousands of hits on Facebook and Twitter. What started off as a crazy idea, is getting crazy response, especially now."Brad Pitt is someone who's really done a lot for the City of New Orleans and the more people are talking about it. It sounds less and less crazy, especially with Gov. Schwarzenegger and Al Franken about to be sworn in as the U.S. Senator from Minnesota," said Harvey. The residency issue could be a problem, but not if the city charter were changed. Besides, fans said who cares."He looks good on a T-shirt," said Neuman with a laugh.Supporting the cause is half the fun. "It's very unique -- an unusual souvenir. I was not expecting to buy one," she said.T-shirts are $20. A portion of T-shirt sales goes to the Make it Right Foundation. If nothing else the movement generating tremendous press for New Orleans.Google, 'Brad Pitt for Mayor' and more than 1 million search results pop up, including a Web site with the top reasons why he should be elected

Mama Angie got the man, the babies and the clout. A good hearted woman.
Angelina Jolie top earning actress Angelina Jolie has been ranked Hollywood's top earning actress, beating partner Brad Pitt's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston into second place. The star placed first in Forbes.com's Hollywood's Top-Earning Actresses list, after taking home 27 million dollars
between June 2008 and June 2009,
Forbes.com said: "Much of Angelina's earnings came from her share of the profits on Wanted, but she also scored a fat upfront check for Salt, an action film originally slated to star Tom Cruise, in which Jolie plays a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy." |

"We kind of decided [on our visit to New Orleans] that this was what we wanted to do," Phipps continues. "The full price tag for building a house [through Make it Right] was around $150,000. We couldn't promise that we can make the connection and build this man's house, but we wanted to be a part of this effort. Here he was, however many years later, and still had all kinds of hope." The band decided to find the funds to build a complete house, which meant that they would have to find $50,000 more than they had already planned on raising. They threw in all of the proceeds from their VIP ticket sales, but they needed more. And so the Peaceblaster: The New Orleans Make it Right Remix was born. They started out inviting friends of theirs in the DJ and hip-hop world to take on individual tracks and the project soon snowballed. By the time they released the remix album through their own 1320 Records on June 23 (available online as mp3s for $0.99 each or $12.98 for all 30, with all proceeds going to Make it Right), the band had more than 30 collaborators including The Glitch Mob, Pnuma Trio and rapper Abstract Rude. To make room for everyone, the remix album stretched to a full 30 tracks, including no fewer than five different (and all excellent) versions of "Hidden Hand, Hidden Fist," the band's standout track from the original Peaceblaster album. |

Brad Pitt's "Make It Right" Unveils New Designs
July 1, 2009
Today actor Brad Pitt's organization Make It Right (MIR) released 14 new designs that will be among the 150 houses reconstructed in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. With this second round of schematics, MIR is offering residents the opportunity to rebuild affordable duplexes in addition to the single-family schemes introduced in 2007. "We always wanted to expand the design catalog, and doubles is a typology that's used throughout New Orleans and the Lower Ninth Ward," says MIR executive director Tom Darden. "It's a demand we were eager to meet." The duplexes are expected to house extended families as well as renters. The duplexes were designed by 14 architecture firms, including eight that are new to the MIR program. The studios include: Atelier Hitoshi, Bild Design, Billes, buildingstudio, BNIM, Constructs, Elemental, Gehry Partners, GRAFT, Kappe Architects, MVRDV, Pugh + Scarpa, Waggonner & Ball Architects, and William McDonough + Partners (a longtime consultant to MIR and responsible for its Cradle-to-Cradle criteria). Most of the new designs feature pared-down geometries that harmonize with traditional regional expression. Exceptions, such as the schematics created by buildingstudio and Graft, another longtime friend of MIR, take on a sleeker appearance, while MVRDV's splayed houses and the angular asymmetry of Pugh + Scarpa's design are more exuberant. For the most part, the designs sport flexible floor plans, forge a close relationship with street life, and integrate outdoor and landscaped spaces with architecture. Two examples from the group should break ground in mid-August. |

Absolutely amazing love story.
Five books to read this summer that are set in Chicago3. Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife- Written in 2003, it is Niffenegger's debut novel about a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to jump through time without control and how this effects the woman who loves him. A touching tale that asks not only what would happen if one could time-travel, but what would happen to the ones we love. Perfect to read and then watch in theaters as it has recently been adapted to film and will be released in theaters in August this year |

A warm welcome for UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie at Kakuma camp in Kenya.
KAKUMA, Kenya, Oct 14 (UNHCR) - Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie leaned forward eagerly as a young Sudanese girl quietly recounted her tale of how she had fled war and hunger in her homeland and finally made her way to Kakuma refugee camp just over the border in north-western Kenya. "She lost her entire family when she was only five years old and has been in this camp for more than 10 years. What do you say to someone who loses her whole family at such an age?" asked Jolie, visibly moved as she heard this and many other stories from refugee girls who had flocked to welcome her on this visit on Sunday. The sprawling camp at Kakuma is home to some 80,000 people. Many of the girls moved Jolie, a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, close to tears as they told her how much they wanted to go to school and receive an education, but for a variety of reasons were often unable to do so. "These girls are so strong, so inspiring. They want an education because they want a better life, they know they don't have to stay forever near the bottom of the pile and want to move up," Jolie said after sitting and chatting with the girls under the shade of a tree at one reception centre. The Goodwill Ambassador shook her head in disbelief as she heard how many of the girls and women in the camp were subjected to various forms of violence - from rape to genital mutilation - and how many were unable to attend school due to domestic chores. "On this trip my main concern has become the plight of refugee women and particularly girls. In Kakuma, close to 1,000 girls are out of school. I was upset to find that a good part of them are in this situation because of both early and forced marriages. I saw 12-year-old mothers!" she said. To address the problems of young girls being abducted for marriage and early pregnancies, the UN refugee agency has set up programmes in the camp, like increasing the number of female police officers to encourage reporting of such incidents. A magistrate from the nearby town of Lodwar travels to Kakuma regularly to hear cases in a mobile court set up to handle various cases, including the abduction of girls for marriage. Refugee women committees established throughout the camp help counsel victims of early pregnancies and speak to communities about the risks of female genital mutilation. In school, an incentive programme is being run to encourage more girls to attend school. Attendance remains very irregular depending on domestic pressures refugee girls may face at home. "As a refugee girl, you are expected to stand in line for hours to fetch water and carry it home, go out and forage for firewood, and cook and clean for the family," said Jolie, noting that girls had to confront many other barriers in order to receive a decent education. The Goodwill Ambassador made a personal donation of $200,000 to UNHCR's work in Kenya, earmarking $50,000 of her donation to build a new school for girls at the camp. Many of its prospective pupils sang and clapped their hands as she unveiled a plaque and planted a tree at the proposed site. "With this help, and the construction of this school, future generations of girls will be saved. Work begins tomorrow," declared Kofi Mable, head of UNHCR's Kakuma sub-office. The plaque reads: "Dedicated to the emancipation of the refugee girls of Kakuma and women's rights and freedom to education." Jolie said she had also heard chilling accounts of children as young as five being subjected to genital mutilation. "A number of the older women have also been raped and suffered other forms of sexual violence," she said. "There can be no compromise on the physical safety and dignity of women as a whole, and particularly the refugee girls." Jolie, who is in Kenya shooting the sequel to the movie, "Tomb Raider", also visited several other projects at the camp and handed out gifts ranging from volleyballs to exercise books. She expressed concern that a projected budget shortfall of some $20 million in UNHCR Kenya could lead to programme cuts. "Most of the people here are already living on the bare minimum - any cut means a life," she said, and appealed to the international community to continue to support "the work of UNHCR and the other organisations working for refugees, such as the World Food Programme - above all to ensure there is funding made available". The Goodwill Ambassador, who was greeted at Kakuma's dirt airstrip by local Turkana tribeswomen, was given an enthusiastic welcome wherever she went in the camp. Young children sang songs and read poems of peace while their parents and older refugees banged drums and performed traditional dances. She began her tour by watching a wheelchair basketball match by the victims of landmines. She moved on to a construction site where houses are built out of mud bricks. Kakuma, which was created after thousands fled fighting in south Sudan - Africa's longest-running civil war - also houses refugees from Angola, Ethiopia, Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. Sudanese, however, make up some 71 percent of the population. Jolie, who has visited several refugee camps around the world since she became a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN refugee agency over one year ago, said she had seen "worse and better" camps than Kakuma. But what made this camp different was the number of girls who simply did not have a chance for a better life. "It is not fair, it is simply not fair - every child, every girl has a right to education. Here they have just enough to survive, but they are so special, so spirited. It is I who must learn from them," she later told a press conference in Nairobi. UNHCR's Representative to Kenya, George Okoth-Obbo, said Jolie's visit was a shot in the arm to all concerned. "It is wonderful and humbling that someone so busy should find time to come here, to use her renown, her artistry, her presence, just to bring some joy into what is undoubtedly a hard life for many of the people here," he said. Eli Roth Talks Quentin, Brad, and Being a 'Basterd'
By
Ben BarnaJuly 02, 2009
As Sgt. Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming WWII revisionist epic Inglorious Basterds, Eli Roth could quite
possibly have the best role in movie history. He's not the star, so the film's success does not rest on his shoulders. He gets to act alongside
Brad Pitt, which, for eye candy purposes, is awesome in its own right. He's getting paid to spit Tarantino dialogue, notoriously some of the best in
the biz. And, perhaps best of all, he gets to annihilate, exterminate, and eradicate, in the most violent ways possible, f**cking Nazis. We spoke to the
Hostel director about bringing Quentin home for the holidays, mimicking Brad Pitt at Cannes, and the 'holy shit' factor that comes with being in a
Tarantino movie.
Did you teach Quentin anything about gore and how to make things look more gruesome?
My next movie is going to be action and sci-fi. It's called Endangered Species. Have you cast anyone yet? No, it's all in the beginning stages. I saw the international poster for Inglorious Basterds. Is it surreal being on the poster for a Quentin Tarantino movie next to Brad Pitt? If my 20-year-old-self knew I'd actually be a Tarantino character one day, he wouldn't fucking believe it. But Quentin said no one else could've done this part but me-me or Adam Sandler. He said if it wasn't one of you guys I would've rewritten it. You're the only Jews that can do |

Paramount opens Shanghai officeZhe Chen will run studio's two-person satelliteJuly 1, 2009, 04:05 PM ET
BEIJING -- Paramount, Hollywood's oldest studio, opened its first China office in Shanghai on Wednesday to oversee the distribution of theatrical
releases and explore local production opportunities in one of the world's fastest growing movie markets.
To import films such as "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," the Paramount Pictures International China Representative Office will liaise with the state-run and Beijing-based China Film Group, China Film Distribution and Huaxia Distribution, PPI's President Andrew Cripps said on the telephone from London. China limits imported films to 20 a year. The Hollywood studios are hopeful that a U.S. case against China at the World Trade Organization soon could break down barriers to market access. Cripps said Paramount had been mulling an office in Shanghai for over a year, "because it is China's commercial hub." The decision to open a China office now had nothing to do with the WTO case, he said. A decision in the WTO case, though reportedly already reached, is not expected to be released until later this year. The closer a film is released in China to its release date in the West, the less time China's vast network of movie pirates has to take a bite of the potential opening week boxoffice take. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" grossed 166 million yuan ($24.3 million) in its first five days of release in China, a record for an English-language film. An opening battle sequence set in Shanghai had the city's name bleeped from the soundtrack, among other cuts but China's notoriously thin-skinned censors. Hopeful, Cripps said, "We have a collaborative relationship with China Film and with the ministry that oversees film censorship. It's definitely getting better." In 2008, "Kung Fu Panda" was the highest grossing foreign picture of the year, grossing roughly $25 million, Cripps said. In April this year, the DWA title "Monsters vs. Aliens" saw a 3-D only release in China via Paramount, which saw a gross of $4.6 million, a figure Cripps said was "a very good result" given the limited number of theaters. "China is being aggressive with its deployment of 3-D. This could prove yet another part of its growth market going forward," he said. In May, Paramount's "Star Trek" set the stage for a new Chinese audience "who will enjoy this franchise for years to come," the company said in the earlier statement. |
