OT: Oscar-Winning Actor Karl Malden Dies at 97
Karl Malden, Oscar-winning actor in 'A Streetcar Named Desire,' dies at 97 By BETH HARRIS Associated Press Writer LOS ANGELES July 1, 2009 (AP) Karl Malden, the Academy Award-winning actor whose intelligent characterizations on stage and screen made him a star despite his plain looks, died Wednesday, his family said. He was 97. Malden died of natural causes surrounded by his family at his Brentwood home, they told the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. He served as the academy's president from 1989-92. While he tackled a variety of characters over the years, he was often seen in working-class garb or military uniform. His authenticity in grittier roles came naturally: He was the son of a Czech mother and a Serbian father, and worked for a time in the steel mills of Gary, Ind., after dropping out of college. Malden said he got his celebrated bulbous nose when he broke it a couple of times playing basketball or football, joking that he was "the only actor in Hollywood whose nose qualifies him for handicapped parking." Thanks for the MIR updates Dulc. Those are some great designs.
http://sev.prnewswire.com...1/DA4103901072009-1.html The green, affordable multi-family home designs of fourteen acclaimed local, national and international architects were released today by Make It Right, the foundation founded by actor Brad Pitt to help rebuild the Lower 9th Ward after Hurricane Katrina. The choice of duplexes as the focus of this design round represents Make It Right's first step beyond building single family houses toward constructing different types of homes. "Before the storm, there were a number of duplexes and doubles in the neighborhood. Families who want to come back to the Lower 9th have been asking us to build them so extended families can live together. And duplexes are right in keeping with Make It Right's mission: They allow more people to live together with less impact on the environment and are more cost-effective to build. "To help us, we turned to some of the best architects in the business. They volunteered their time, met with the community and potential homeowners and applied their experience and creativity to come up with high quality designs that really advance the concept of the duplex," according to Make It Right Executive Director, Tom Darden. "All of these architects faced a daunting set of challenges. They were asked to base their work on a very traditional New Orleans home - the duplex. We also asked them to make the home green, affordable, and durable enough to weather the storms to come. In addition, they were expected to do it using materials inspired by William McDonough's Cradle-to-Cradle philosophy and verified to be non-toxic and recycle-able. They cleared that high bar AND created homes of great and lasting beauty," Darden explained. While each of the 14 duplex designs is unique, the architects tackled some common problems and arrived at innovative solutions that could change the way multi-family homes are built: |

The lack of making MoneyBall probably has more intrigue and mystery than the movie itself. Thanks for the articles.

Hollywood's Top-Earning Actresses
Dorothy Pomerantz, 07.01.09, 06:00 AM EDT LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Angelina Jolie vacillates between two kinds of movies: award bait, like A Mighty Heart, and action films, like Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The former earn her nominations and critical praise: She won an Oscar in 2000 for her work in Girl, Interrupted and a Best Actress nomination for last year's Changeling. The latter earn her big bucks. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where Jolie met her boyfriend, Brad Pitt, earned $480 million at the worldwide box office. Last year's Wanted brought in $341 million. Jolie's cinematic butt kicking made her the highest-paid actress on our annual Celebrity 100 list. Between June 2008 and June 2009, Jolie earned an estimated $27 million. Much of that came from her share of the profits on Wanted, but she also scored a fat upfront check for Salt, an action film originally slated to star Tom Cruise, in which Jolie plays a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian spy. Judging by scenes filmed on the streets of New York City, the film should have plenty of action to satisfy Jolie's fans. In Pictures: Hollywood's Top-Earning Actresses To figure out earnings, we talked to agents, managers, producers and lawyers to determine what the stars got as upfront pay on movies they are currently shooting, as well as back-end pay earned after a movie hit the theaters. We also looked at any money actresses might have earned through their perfume or clothing lines. As is still typical for Hollywood, our actresses earned significantly less than their male counterparts. Harrison Ford was the top-earning actor this year with $65 million, $38 million more than Jolie earned. All told, the top 10 actors earned $393 million, compared with $183 million for the top 10 actresses. Coming in second behind Jolie is Jennifer Aniston, continuing the never-ending tabloid battle between the two actresses. Aniston earned $25 million thanks to her work in the romantic comedy Marley & Me and the upcoming comedy The Baster, in which Aniston plays a woman who tries to become pregnant on her own. Aniston still earns money from Friends and she gets a nice paycheck shilling for Glaceau's SmartWater. Meryl Streep ranks third on our list thanks to last summer's surprise smash hit Mamma Mia. The film took in $603 million at theaters internationally and helped Streep earn $24 million between June 2008 and June 2009. Now instead of being known just as the most-nominated actress in history, she's also known as a moneymaker. Streep should soon be able to boost her asking price, especially if her upcoming movie Julie & Julia does well at the box office. Being an Oscar winner doesn't always mean a big payday though. Kate Winslet, who won the Best Actress Oscar last year for her work in The Reader, ranks 15th on our list with only $2 million in earnings between June 2008 and June 2009. The Titanic actress hasn't appeared in a commercially successful film since 2006's The Holiday. She still makes a decent living though doing ads for companies like American Express ( AXP - news - people ) and Lancome. I hate how even the non-tabloid media like to compared Angelina and Aniston.

Brad Pitt and Sumo Champ Musashimaru Appear in SoftBank CommercialBrad Pitt is at it again, appearing in yet another commercial for Japanese carrier SoftBank. In this commercial, Pitt plays a character doing everything he can to please sumo champ Musashimaru. I love it when his sandal breaks and Pitt comes to the rescue. Oh yeah, and I suppose there's a cell phone in the ad as well.Note: If someone could translate the text for me at the end of the ad… That'd be great. Someone answers: It says, "If you're going to carry, use a light one." I think they're implying that the phoneis really light (in weight). The word for "carry" and the word for "cell phone" is the same so I think they're making a play on words… So there you go… translated for free… |
