It took a while, but a couple of hours after he was beat out by Kris Allen for the title of "American Idol," Adam Lambert answered questions from reporters at the Nokia Theater and his message was all about togetherness.

The inevitable question -- which came in the form of a suggestion from the questioner -- of whether Adam lost because he's presumed to be gay (he hasn't confirmed this) came up. The question: "The blog are going to be saying tomorrow that 'he didn't win because he was gay, or whatever...'"

"Is that what they're going to say?" Adam said with a smile. "The blogs have a lot of opinions, don't they? I think that Kris won because he's a great artist, and I was happy to be a runner up to that."

Adam appeared to be totally happy with the result and the two-hour finale show that he helped put on.

"I got to sing with Queen and with Kiss," he said. "First or second, it doesn't matter. I got to sing with two great heroic rock bands of mine."

Asked if he's gotten any offers yet, Adam said, "A couple."

He said he Paula Abdul "really summed it up" for him, telling she was proud of what he accomplished. The other judges, Adam said, "were all really supportive, you know. I didn't get a chance to talk to Simon after the show. Nothing but positive support. That's what's been so great about this experience. It's been a very supportive environment.

"I never felt like anybody was, like, you can't sing, you can't do that, or you can't wear that. They were always, like, 'Run with it, Adam. Do your thing."

Adam wasn't taking anything for granted heading into the finish, so he didn't seem to be as surprised by the result as many people were.

"I knew it was going to be a close race," he said. "(Kris) is incredibly talented, and he's a good person. We got to do a really good finale, and we're both going to do great things in the future. For me, it's not about what happened tonight, it's about tomorrow, it's about what's next."

Adam left with a parting thought on togetherness and finding common ground despite apparent differences.

"We are seemingly so different, but we found a way to get along and find a common bond, mostly through music, but also just through talking and getting to know each other," Adam said. "And if there's anything that can come from this experience that I hope all the fans out there can pick up is that even if you're really different, there's a way to get along with each other. It's not about, 'You beat me because of this.' Or, you're different. It's about finding the common stuff that makes it work. We got out there and did the Queen duet and we made it work because we found a common ground with each other. If there's anything we can take from this, it's bringing you guys together is what our goal was, not separating you."
