Members of the hip-hop and rock infused group N.E.R.D. were detained in Malaysia last weekend resulting in the cancellation of upcoming performances in Indonesia.
According to the Associated Press, the group performed at the Sunburst KL International Festival in Jakarta and from there planned to travel to neighboring Indonesia to fulfill other concert bookings. However, just after the show, local officials detained the crew stating that they did not have the proper permits necessary to legally perform in the country. N.E.R.D. allegedly failed to meet the stringent government regulated performance guidelines in a country that houses the world's most devout Muslim population.
Immigration Director General Datuk Mahmood Adam told local media, "Following investigations, we found that the group did not receive permission from the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry to perform at the concert, after their statements were recorded, they were released with assurance from the concert organizer."
The Associated Press also confirmed that the group was apprehended because the concert promoter failed to acquire the obligatory permits and documentation from the Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry.
The 12- hour concert featured other notable bands such as Korn, They Will Kill Us and a barrage of other international on local acts. N.E.R.D. was the only band to be detained.
