How long did it take you to run say.....30 minutes? Did you have to build up to it or did you just take off and run?

I built up to it. I started week one running a half mile. Then I pushed myself to run for a mile the next week. When I was comfortable with that I ran a
mile and a half. Then 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, and finally 4.5. I got to a point where I could run 40-45 minutes straight (it took around two months total). I
would then walk around .5-1 mile for cool down.

My little sister is doing the Couch to 5K program, which will get her to 30 minutes in 9 weeks. I know a lot of people who have had success with that plan.
My husband tried doing it, but it moved way too slowly for him. On week 3, the plan had him running 3 minutes at a time, but he pretty much said fuck it, and just did 30 minutes right then. |

Well I'd say time would depend on age and physical ability from starting point but I did it over five days by increasing my run time by 5 min every day and
starting at 10 min. I jogged the first day. Ipod helps to focus less on your breathing because I find that the more I focus on that, the more I slow down. This
helped increase my sprint times too so it's a helpful exercise.

I run 3 - 4 miles, but that's at the gym and on a treadmill. I heard it's harder running outside, which makes sense: there's resistance from wind,
terrains can be different, etc. It took me a month or so of gradually increasing my running increments as well.

I personally prefer running outside...Makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere. :-)
Just listen to your body. Find a pace that works for you and go as you can. Find a good playlist too. That is what keeps me going. I'm training for the Country Music Half Marathon in Nashvegas on April 25. My first one! |
