Posts: 9774 02/01/2009 2:41 PM	I was so wasted...I vaguely remember getting into bed but that's it. Should I go back and pay it? My friends all stayed until closing and the bartenders never said anything.

Posts: 13776 02/01/2009 2:47 PM	well, the bartender probably got it taken care of, but you should go back and tip him/her. i don't know what kind of place it is, but he or she may have even been forced to pick up the tab (some places do that as way of preventing bartenders from giving friends free drinks; that way, missing alcohol is still accounted for). going back and making sure that bartender gets a tip would be the right thing to do. as a server who has had people scoot without paying their bill, i can tell you it is a pain in the ass to deal with managers who won't believe that's what happened.

Posts: 4427 02/01/2009 2:53 PM	That's weird that they let you have a tab without giving them a credit card to hold. For almost every bar I go to, you have to let them hold your credit card if you want a tab or you just pay with cash. If you ever want to go back to that bar again, I would go back and pay. Waitress pay attention and they will remember your face.

I guess they have been screwed over one too many times. They also have chalk boards on the wall where they write who has written a bad check to them. They keep the names up there for a month.

A lot of places now just swipe your card when they start your tab and give it back to you so it's in the system, but to not even hold on to the credit card? Yeah, that is weird. You should definitely go back and pay it, what kind of question is that?

But maybe they haven't had issues like this prior cos people don't get sloppy drunk that often or they're just trustworthy.. who knows. Or maybe it was a mistake on their behalf. And TBH - unless it's a dive bar and/or supeeeerrrrrrr slow - they probably didn't even remember/connect you to your friends by closing. Trust - they really don't pay that much attention. A LOT of my friends are all bartenders and they get super pissed when/if people leave w/o paying. One of my manager buddies literally went and drove to the other bars in town to hunt this one group down once. And even though I go out w/ the same 2 or 3 girls almost nightly - they still don't really connect them to me [for the thing above]. Go back and pay it. It's not like he/they are gonna be mad at you, they'd prolly be more appreciative then anything.

Trust - they really don't pay that much attention. I disagree. As a former bartender/waitress at a very busy establishment, it's very easy to remember faces because that's pretty much your job. You go up to the same people several times a night, look them in the eye and ask what they want. Unless you're a complete idiot, you should remember their faces.

I have chased people down at other bars in the area because i dont want to pay someones $60 bar tab. just go in the next day and show your face, apologize profusely and pay up. they will remember you and even if they never say any snide remarks to you they will remember and you will get the shittiest service of your life. they didnt drink your liquor- you did. dont make them pay.
