Or is this only abroad? I'm sure places here could use the money too though right? I'm just guessing here, but places here could certainly use more money for family planning, but it's no comparison to centers in places where the governments are so poor or corrupt that they don't do anything to support family planning. I'm sure, though, that Obama will increase family planning services in the States, too. I think it's a worthwhile cause anywhere in the world.

Bush and the presidents before him have always pledged to support poor countries. So I don't get why some people are bitching now. What the Bush admin threatened to do to clinics or organizations who distributed the money (our tax dollars) was that they would cut funding if those clinics performed abortions. But what they overlooked was that those same clinics also provided people access to contraceptives, family planning, etc. People from many of these nations that receive aid have very little to no knowledge about STDs and the clinics are also used to help distribute that information. By restricting them from receiving more money, the more common services that they provide are the ones that suffer most. Those clinics are not abortion clinics, they provide women (and men) different options so they can decide what's best for THEM.

The truth is that this affected a lot more NGo's than just the ones that performed abortions. I am from the Dominican Republic, where abortion is ilegal but all the ngo's that give away condoms or free sex education in poor neighborhoods where put on that same ban.

For these reasons, it is right for us to rescind this policy and restore critical efforts to protect and empower women and promote global economic development. For too long, international family planning assistance has been used as a political wedge issue, the subject of a back and forth debate that has served only to divide us. I have no desire to continue this stale and fruitless debate. It is time that we end the politicization of this issue. In the coming weeks, my Administration will initiate a fresh conversation on family planning, working to find areas of common ground to best meet the needs of women and families at home and around the world. I have directed my staff to reach out to those on all sides of this issue to achieve the goal of reducing unintended pregnancies. They will also work to promote safe motherhood, reduce maternal and infant mortality rates and increase educational and economic opportunities for women and girls. In addition, I look forward to working with Congress to restore U.S. financial support for the U.N. Population Fund. By resuming funding to UNFPA, the U.S. will be joining 180 other donor nations working collaboratively to reduce poverty, improve the health of women and children, prevent HIV/AIDS and provide family planning assistance to women in 154 countries. chuuuuuch
